Summary/Abstract: At its meeting on December 6, 2007, the EU Council for Justice and Home Affairs finally confirmed the expansion of the Schengen area by nine new member states, including the Czech Republic. These are countries that joined the EU three years ago, and their joining the group of states that abolished border controls among themselves is often understood as the definitive tearing down of the former iron curtain. As of December 21, 2007, border controls at land borders (or at ports) will therefore be abolished, and on March 31, 2008, controls at international airports for flights within the extended Schengen area will also end.
