Summary/Abstract: It was in response to the impacts of the pandemic that the European Union adopted a new concept of trade policy based on the principle of open strategic autonomy. By applying this principle, the Union wants to achieve a stable, values-based trading system that is open, focuses on diversifying supply chains and allows the EU access to key commodities. All this with an emphasis on strengthening the EU's ability to act and resilience. The new form of EU trade policy reflects and accentuates the European trend of maintaining a balance between openness and protection of the Union's internal market.
