Summary/Abstract: The European security environment has fundamentally changed over the past decade in response to growing geopolitical risks. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the growing influence of authoritarian powers such as China and Russia, and the escalation of tensions in key regions such as the Middle East or the Indo-Pacific are reshaping the way Europe perceives its security and defence. These challenges are leading to deepening defence cooperation within and beyond the EU, including the development of new policies, structures and initiatives such as Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) or the European Peace Facility. At the same time, the growing emphasis on strengthening collective resilience and cooperation with NATO underlines the need for strategic alignment between European and transatlantic partners.
