Summary/Abstract: The next UN Secretary-General will be António Guterres of Portugal. On Thursday 13 October, on a recommendation by the Security Council, the UN General Assembly decided to oppose the nomination of a Portuguese candidate. Despite this consensus, the outcome of the elections is a great surprise for many. Since Guterres has had strong support from the beginning, it has long been expected to elect a candidate with a different profile and from another geographic area. So why did he become the winner? What can be expected of it? And what is the role of the Secretary-General within the World Organization?
