Short Description
The Booklets of Sárospatak were launched in the summer of 1857. Its first editor, János Erdélyi, was a teacher at the Patak College. Erdélyi was then a teacher of "philosophy and education", a literary man of national fame, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Kisfaludy Society, and one of the most distinguished Hungarian aestheticians and critics. The editorial responsibility was assumed by László Hegedűs, dean of the Lower Church, and Gábor Szeremley, "theological teacher", i.e. head of the dogmatic department. The editorial intention was expressed in the subtitle of the journal: "Protestant and scientific journal", which aimed to publish studies, articles and communications "in the field of church and education, science and literature". The internal structure of the scientific journal was divided as follows: church and theology, church history, education, education, humanities, history of art, arts, literature, book reviews, criticisms, miscellaneous publications. The 13 volumes of the Sárospatak Journal were characterized by the highest standards of scholarship of the time. Its source value - especially for the history of the Tisza Inner Diocese - is almost unique, and only the Sárospatak Reformed Newspaper later rivals it. It is not negligible that he encouraged the teachers to scientific work and at the same time gave a boost to their publication activities. But he also included nationally renowned writers in his circle of colleagues, as well as pastors living a demanding spiritual life in the Tisza region. Above all, he integrated the College into the national academic and literary circles. He educated me in a self-conscious, demanding church life, "the mirror of the present, the source of the past." The last issue of the journal appeared in 1869, and in 1904 the successor of the same name, which lasted only two volumes, was relaunched. In 1997, the journal was relaunched as a biannual, and from 2009 as a quarterly.
