Short Description

Sociological Problems is the only academic journal in Bulgaria addressing issues of sociology. It was established in 1968 as a quarterly and is issued by the Institute for the Study of Societies and Knowledge at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in conjunction with the Bulgarian Sociological Association. The publishers’ philosophy stems from two significant sets of factors: • The journal is being put together in complex circumstances, amid efforts to inculcate and promote a democratic political culture in Bulgaria, calling for a thorough reassessment of the role of sociological knowledge in an environment of radical social changes. Thence the journal’s ambition to provide an arena of intellectual debate related to the formation of critical political discourse, one that largely absents in this country at present. • The instrumentalization of sociological science not only within the framework of Bulgaria but on an international scale, in consequence of which fundamental methodological issues of sociological self-reflection have been neglected. Sociological Problems, therefore, deems it imperative to stay focused on the big issues of the social being of sociology, of the possible paths for its development in the light of its own historical heritage and, respectively, of the images that it creates of itself, of the sensitivity for the points of divergence between sociology as science and the social world it interprets; of the point in time where it becomes necessary to redefine its categorical apparatus. An underlying element of the strategy of Sociological Problems, therefore, is not so much to present ‘snapshots’ of the social situation at a particular moment in time, as to look out for one constellation of possibilities contained in it or another. In keeping with this strategy, we strive to express on the pages of our journal the potentials of Bulgarian sociology (rather than merely reproduce its actual images), while seeking to measure it against the practices of established traditions in international sociology. The aim is not so much to catch up with whatever is ahead of us, but rather, to see where we stand by comparing different social-cultural states of sociology, and thus to contribute to a better understanding of it. From such a perspective, every issue of Sociological Problems is structured in the form of dialogue between Western and Bulgarian scholars. A major aim of Sociological Problems is to involve university students in the discussions and debates featured in it; we therefore run a permanent column titled ‘Debuts’.
