In this paper, a link is drawn between fate and heroism as they appear in the works of Shakespeare (more particularly in Julius Caesar, Hamlet and King Lear) and Nietzsche. Heroism is first defined as a philosophical and non necessarily martial notion, while destiny or fate is distinguished from fatum, as Nietzsche understands it. Eventually, amor fati or the love for destiny is seen as tragic in essence in both works, but not in a pessimistic way, however painful it proves to have been in the life of the philosopher at least.

This essay deals critically with Nietzsche’s anthropological typology of the “free spirit par excellence”, “we spirits”, persons endowed with positive as against negative power patterns, and the ideal of the Übermensch. The conclusions are twofold. The first is that actually it was not Nietzsche’s ideal of the Overman that was the pinnacle of his anthropological philosophy, but the even more ideal type of the “free spirit par excellence”. The second conclusion is that it is impossible to envisage a society consisting of such “free spirits”. This thesis is highlighted by contrasting the society of Übermenchen, who, according to Nietzsche, might live in society and even need it as a sine qua non for their cultivation, with free spirits par excellence, who are by definition free from any social ethos, and hence impossible within its framework. However, I argue that, on Nietzsche’s terms, the ideal of the Übermench is also not viable in society. Hence this essay points to an inherent flaw of Nietzsche’s existential philosophy—the non-viability of its most sublime ideals.

The present paper will present a series of similarities that exist between Mihai Eminescu’s creation and the one of Friedrich Nietzsche, across the three fundamental components: • personal life: we can observe an obvious physical resemblance as well as identical personal experiences, such as love (Eminescu – Veronica Micle, Nietzsche – Lou Salomé);• literary creation: we can fiind common themes such as woman in poetry or Zarathustra/Zoroastru in prose, but also similar visions regarding the nascency of the overman (Dionysiac for Nietzsche in Aşa grăit-a Zarathustra, Christian for Eminescu in Sărmanul Dionis) or romantic themes like the star; • philosophic creation: where we found common ethical matters such as good and evil, existentialist matters such as life and death, but also the myth of eternal return, and cognitive matters such as reasoning – thinking relation.

The year 2008 is not only the anniversary of the dawn of political transformation, but also the 60th anniversary of establishment of the State of Israel. It is a topic we plan to discuss over the coming year. Our main concern is the role of Hungarians who took part in this unique historical phenomenon. This present issue already gives a taste of our future program: Max Nordau, one of the founding fathers of Zionism was born in Budapest (just like Theodore Herzl) and also completed his education here. Steven Aschheim's article compares the way Nordau and Nietzsche gave answers to the basic challenges at the turn of the century.

The main objective of this approach is to show that the problem of truth is a real one in the nietzschean philosophy and, to outline the general framework of the new image of truth suggested by Nietzsche. In this respect, I assumed that the views Nietzsche expresses as regards language respectively reason are essential. Language simplifies reality, captures the nonessential and it is always untimely; reason performs with “logical fictions”. Thus, the so-called truth is the expression of tampering with the reality. Assuming these, the problem of gnoseological truth must be rethought in other terms. Nietzsche builds the image of truth starting from hermeneutical foundations, the truth being an active process: the work of interpretation of the will to power. The dynamic of building the truth is therefore, expressed by a subtle movement in the space between literalness and metaphor.

This paper examines Heidegger’s lecture to the Bremen Club – delivered in 1953 – entitled Wer ist Nietzsche’s Zarathustra as the foreground for Heidegger’s notion of Augenblick in connection to the figure of Zarathustra and the concept of Eternal Return of the Same in the Nietzsche lectures – delivered in 1937. In these lectures Heidegger sums up his interpretation of Zarathustra as the figure whose task it is communicate the doctrine of the eternal return of the same and who therefore has as his particular task the explanation of the meaning of time. Heidegger cites repeated sayings of the eternal return. At the centre of the sayings is the passage referring to the riddle of the doorway named Augenblick. The question I shall endeavour to ask is: what is the eventuation of the Augenblick in the turn (Kehre) of the return (Wiederkehre)? I argue that the notion of Augenblick is key to Heidegger’s thinking of the turn and the understanding of the figure of Zarathustra as the return of the transcendence of Dasein. This connection becomes explicit through an exegesis of the different analogies delineated in the structure of the event of Augenblick – er-augen, Er-eignis – with Wieder-kehr/Wider-kunft.

Interpretation disputes about Nietzsche‘s philosophy is still weakening. Nietzsche‘s texts are full of poetic and extremely rich imagination, and subtle psychological insight, full of expressivity, and exaggeration is ridiculous to overstatement, wonderful consistency and also frequent and quite obvious contradictions. The problem sui generis are Nietzsche‘s political views, or the area of his thinking, which could be, although only with certain reservations, call political.

This text is an analysis of a relationship between two outstanding minds of modernist period. The relationship significantly influenced personality and development of the author of The Birth of Tragedy. The main part of the disquisition focuses on Nietzsche’s complex personality which gets revealed not only in his relationship with Wagner but also in his way of thinking and style of writing, which is still a challenge for most readers.

The article analyzes the reception of works of Nietzsche in Lithuania before 1937. It states that great Lithuanian artists were the first to experience the positive influence of Nietzsche’s ideas. It was in 1912, when Nietzsche was first mentioned in a published philosophical article. It was the article of Pranas Dovydaitis „Knowledge and Faith“. The article looks into the critical attitude on the philosophy of morals of Nietzsche presented in the works of Pranas Kuraitis, Valentinas Gustainis, Izidorius Tamo aitis, Antanas Miliauskis, Juozas Grinius and other Lithuanian authors. The interpretations of Juozas Čepėnas and Kazys Daukša on the Nietzsche’s ideas receive a more positive evaluation. A conclusion is drawn that, compared to the studies of Nietzschean moral criticism and the meaning of the re-evaluation of values carried on in Germany, serious studies of the philosophy of Nietzsche in Lithuania have been lagging behind.

Hostility towards transsexualism has not only persisted in nonacademic communities, but also in academic scholarships, based not only on identifications of gender with sexuality and sexual identity, but also on the linguistic conventions of dichotomies of matter and ideas. Nietzsche’s aesthetics not only challenges this tradition of linguistically constructed dichotomies, but also the exclusive separation between genders and sexual identities. Referring to The Birth of Tragedy and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the article examines how Nietzsche’s ideas of language as a system of metaphors contributes to an understanding of transgender respectively transsexual issues as non-regressive expressions of selfhood, challenging rather than confirming gender dichotomies.

The article is devoted to the identification of some intersection points in the philosophical ideas of F. Nietzsche and V. Lenin. The analysis of Lenin’s views, given by Louis Althusser in a number of his works, can serve as the methodological basis for such a comparison. In this perspective, Lenin’s understanding of philosophy is characterized by the fact that philosophy is treated not only as a theory but, above all, as a practice of struggle for domination. Lenin and Nietzsche share the dynamic view of the universe, the idea of the leading role of contradictions and struggle in the world’s being. Philosophy appears as an expression of some hidden impulses, which are ultimately reducible to the will to power. Therefore, for both thinkers knowledge appears not as the result of pure and objective cognition, but as a product of the struggle of power instincts, and knowledge itself is a necessary element of any power order.

This paper aims to examine some features of Nietzsche’s philosophy of the subject, by providing a hermeneutical reconstruction of the critique and formation of the self. My reconstructionwill put a particular focus on the Nietzschean account of the human drives. The modelto guide this investigation is the metaphor of the self as a “puzzle without solution”.According to this image, the self is something like a peculiar game of puzzle, whosepieces were not designed to fit together into a certain image. The pieces of the game arean individual’s drives or instincts, which have to be unified into a coherent whole. Sucha process is the transition from the “subject as multiplicity” to the “free spirit”.

The article deals with the concept of nihilism in the thinking of the Italian philosopher Giorgio Colli. It becomes clear that Colli’s project, i.e. a specific approach to the origin of philosophy, allows us to speak about the nihilisitic vocation of philosophy. The author shows Colli’s nihilistic attitude to be established through Nietzsche’s nihilism. The latter, for Colli, is not a “concept”, but a route. In respect of Nietzsche’s philosophy, Colli treats script as a complicated thing: it is related to the nihilistic vocation of philosophy. The nihilistic structure of Colli’s thinking is determined by the great challenge that is set for philosophy: the challenge of ecstasy. The article raises the question about naming the effort of the philosopher who conceives a nihilistic vocation for philosophy. What could we get from the continous death of philosophy and of the esoteric attempt to express what can’t be expressed?

The aim of this paper is to discuss the later development of Nietzsche’s notion of ressentiment in the philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Vladimir Jankelevitch. In the context of Nietzsche’s philosophy, the concept of ressentiment is used to explain a revolution in morality. It is argued that ressentiment should not be understood with appeal to the motivation of a subject, whose notion Nietzsche refuses, or to the intensity of exterior excitation, but rather to the function of memory. In Deleuze’s theory, ressentiment is understood as the product of reactive forces that triumph over the active by eliminating the faculty of forgetting. The man of ressentiment is said to be unable to get rid of external excitations and, in turn, he projects his frustration on other people. Because of this, the figure of a “faulty other” functions as a priori of the man of ressentiment. In the philosophy of Jankelevitch, ressentiment is also understood as a negative, anti-vital phenomenon. However, Jankelevitch also introduces the positive notion of ressentiment, which functions as a precondition of authentic forgiveness.

The article examines the efforts of Friedrich Nietzsche to recognize the crisis of Western culture adequately and to find ways of overcoming of this crisis. Nietzsche proposes to consider culture as manifestations of what he calls "life". With this word, he denotes a certain principle of reality, the structure of which is characterized by self-referentiality, suggestive of Aristotle's noēseōs noēsis, Descartes' cogito or Hegel's "spirit". However, Nietzsche is well aware that "life" goes beyond the framework of traditional forms of thinking, and that the attempts to squeeze it into this framework is the cause of the crisis of culture. This understanding pushes Nietzsche to search for a new form of thinking - risky thinking. However, risk is inseparable from possible failure. In recognizing this, Nietzsche ultimately accepts his failure as a nobilitation.

Nietzsche's views on the Laws of Manu are widely considered some of his most controversial. Even among those who express a supportive view of Nietzschean philosophy tend to shy away or outright ignore his apparent praise for the laws responsible for the caste system in India. It is strange enough that Nietzsche would ever comment on the caste system and weirder still is that these comments on the Laws of Manu seem to be one of the only overt examples of Nietzsche’s political philosophy. It might be akin to contemporary readers of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit suddenly getting goosebumps and chills of terror as they discover the conclusive section of ‘Observing Reason’ where Hegel devotes time and effort to discussing the defunct science of phrenology.
