The article deals with a topical problem in modern humanities studies, i.e. the problem of personal self-identification. The investigation covers the methods of representation of this problem in the works of Diana Arbenina. Based on the play “Motofozo”, it is proved that Arbenina’s philosophy is remarkable for the perception of the Self as the Other. For the harmonious existence of a person, it is necessary that the external Self be united with the internal Self (the Other).

This article introduces the activity of artistic directors Teresa Costantini, Angela Paghetti, and Colomba Coppa in the service of Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga-Nevers, their generous patron and the last Duke of Mantua. Referencing studies that were initiated 30 years ago in the field of musicology and using recent historical research and archival sources, the essay highlights the artistic, organisational, and management responsibilities of commedia dell’arte directors. It reconstructs their relations with Ferdinando Carlo, ducal agents, and the Gonzaga court, while also focussing on their relations with Venetian Grimani impresarios, with whom the Duke of Mantua had established a lasting and generous collaboration. Performing women, prejudicially equated with prostitutes and beneficiaries of gifts and privileges, were depictions of love and glory for a discredited prince, whose array of artists was, however, amongst the most dense and dynamic in Italy. Actresses progressively moved away from the codes of courtliness and, as professionals registered and paid with money, they came to have strong bargaining power and levels of autonomy. However, they were subjected to rules and obligations, especially in Venice, where theatre owners made spaces available only to companies under the protection of the princes who were politically aligned with the Serenissima. During the years of the so-called Spanish succession war, Diana, Aurelia, and the others moved between Venice, Mantua, and Casale, where Ferdinando Carlo had moved after the blockade of Mantua, accompanied by a colourful procession of women, musicians, and commedia actors. Through theatrical misadventures mingled with military manoeuvres in Mantuan territory, and via changes of destination, programme, or repertoire, we read the story of a duchy that had lost its identity and of a rapidly changing theatrical market.

This paper discusses the politics and multi-functionality of storytelling in Diana Abu-Jaber’s novel Crescent (2003). I argue that the strategic use of storytelling places Crescent as a complex hybrid text that projects the nature, and development, of Arab American literature in the contemporary era. In addition to having the practice of storytelling as an apparatus to project identity in Crescent, Abu-Jaber reappropriates its empowered status in Arab culture as well as politicizes its image in the mind of her readers. Besides employing critical and analytical approaches to the novel, this paper relies on arguments and perspectives of prominent postcolonial and literary critics and theorists such as Edward Said, Suzanne Keen, Walter Benjamin, and Samaya Sami Sabry, to name a few.

Since Martin Bashir’s interview of Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, represents a unique and unparalleled media event in the media world, and since the BBC Panorama interview represents an instance of successful communication and ideal delivery, it offers possibilities for analysing diverse discourse phenomena. The objects of this investigation are linguistic items investigated as part of highly heterogeneous categories, such as discourse connectives and discourse markers. Whilst inspecting the interview transcript, it was noticed that certain discourse markers had developed interaction functions in the process of discoursisation in addition to their primary transaction functions. Moreover, some discourse markers in the BBC Panorama interview have the role of closing the exchange between Bashir and Lady Diana, thereby introducing an utterance that summarises the main point of discussion. Some discourse markers under investigation mark an utterance as a rhetorical question. In other words, these lexical items mark a conclusion that can be reached by the interlocutor on the basis of the previous assertion. By way of illustration, the paper also offers certain corpus-based examples, showing that discourse markers may contribute to deriving conclusions that have been transformed from particular to general, among other things.
