An anthology of texts by Aleida Assmann that corresponds to a growing interest in memory studies in Poland. Assmann is one of the most distinguished contemporary representatives of memory studies, who is in addition interested in the issues of memory in Central Eastern Europe. The author combines theoretical reflection, based on an approach originating in literary and cultural studies, with case studies illustrating the transformations of memory after the Second World War. The texts collected in the first part of the book present various concepts and typologies of memory that can be directly applied in analysing phenomena of Polish culture, in the second – various aspects of German and European memory politics.

The publication presents the early history of an encyclopedia in a detailed and multifaceted way, deepening the existing research on the issue. The author outlines the title metaphor of an encyclopedia as “manticore” – a hybrid entity composed of words imitating things, he thoroughly analyses theoretical problems of Western culture which are part of the encyclopedism, referring to its pre-modern realizations (from the lost work of Hippias of Elis to "Great Mirror" of Vincent of Beauvais and Benedykt Chmielowski’s "New Athens"). The books also explores Diderot’s "Encyclopédie" and the most important features of modern encyclopedias.

A key publication concerning the theory of orality and literacy, one of the most important conceptions to emerge in cultural studies in the second half of the 20th century. It presents the fundamental characteristics of literary orality in its anthropological and theoretical sense. It discusses the importance of writing for changes in thought, the role of print and the transition from the world of sound to the world of sight. It considers the issue of narrative, the plot structure and the characters in oral and written literature. It refers to the main methodological trends in 20th century literary studies, from structuralism and New Criticism, through speech act theory and its literary consequences to deconstruction.

The book addresses the issue of place and role in culture and 19th century everyday life of two forms: the illness diary and the painter’s sketchbook as testimonies of a phenomenon referred to as the privacy turn. Its participants included not only professional artists but also by amateurs of different status, regardless of gender and age. The book, based on hitherto unknown archive sources, shows the significance of that movement and describes some such sources (Wanda Czartoryska’s illness diary, the sketchbooks of the Branicki family, which include unknown sketches of very young Wojciech Kossak), pointing to the diversity of their forms and the transformations they underwent.

The book presents common threads of life and work of Karol Irzykowski (1873-1944), Ladislav Klíma (1878-1928) and Géza Csáth (1883-1919) as potentially representative for modernism (and the experience of modernity) in Central European literatures and cultures in the transnational and comparative perspective. The starting point for reflection are diaries, in which the self-record becomes the matrix of innovative prose of the three authors as well as the inspiration for (autobiographically marked) critical-literary reflection on the borderline of Irzykowski’s culture theory, Klíma's anti-system philosophy and Csáth’s exploration of the limits of literature and psyche.

The books deals with the part Polish exiles played in the colonial expansion of the Russian Empire on the Kazakh steppes of Central Asia in the 19th century. The basic analytical perspective of the work are the theory of orality and literacy and post-colonial studies.

The first Polish translation of the "Image Acts", written by Horst Bredekamp, professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, an art historian specialising in the theory of the image, political iconology and scientific imagery. In the publication, illustrated with about 200 reproductions of artworks and iconographic sources, the author defines the impact of the image on human feelings, thinking and actions. He offers the reader a reflection on how the recipient's self-perspective transforms itself into an interaction between the recipient himself and the world that meets him. This process, according to the author, occurs in three dimensions: schematic – as a result of imitation of gestures, poses and image formulas, substitutive – as an exchange between the image and the body, and autonomous – as the inner force of the influence of the form itself.
