Forum “Cultural Heritage in Kosovo: From Apple of Discord to Ferment of Reconciliation”

Author(s): Author Not Specified / Language(s): English

On 14 November 2009, Europa Nostra, the Pan European Federation for Cultural Heritage, organised a Forum bringing together one hundred heritage professionals and interested members of the public from across Europe at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to discuss possible ways forward in the protection of the cultural heritage in Kosovo. // While recognising the scale of deliberate heritage destruction in the recent past, the continuing threats and state of disrepair of many historic buildings and sites, both listed and non-listed, the preparatory meetings generated positive energy and some optimism for the future. Among the individuals with a heart for cultural heritage there is a genuine will to get to know one another and to act together for the benefit of the safeguard of the cultural heritage in Kosovo, as an integral part of Europe’s common cultural heritage. The discussions yielded a wealth of practical ideas and initiatives that could be deployed to bring to life the hopes and ideals expressed at the Forum. // The publication contains the transcripts of the recorded speeches and discussions during the Forum.

Kosova: Separate Worlds. Reflections and Analyses 1998

Author(s): Shkëlzen Maliqi / Language(s): English

Published in 1998 by Dukagjini Publishing House (Prishtina) // "I had not planned to write this book. It gathers a number of articles that deal with current (1998!) aspects of the problem of Kosova and the Balkan crisis in general. The selection of articles is perhaps not as representative as it could have been; out of hundreds that I have published since the mid- 1980s to today, included in this book are only those that were translated into English. Still, I hope that this selection of articles will be useful to specialists dealing with the Balkan crisis and the Albanian question, as well as to journalists and those interested in learning more about the essence of the processes underway. // For those with a wider interest, I have included two texts that deal with Kosova's art scene in the 1990's as well as an interview containing autobiographical references and information in which internal political and spiritual currents among Kosova Albanians overlap." (Shkelzen Maliqi)

Kosovo Remittance Study

Author(s): Erëblina Elezaj,Faton Bislim,Iris Duri / Language(s): English

Published in July, 2012 by the Prishtina-Office of UNDP // UNDP’s Kosovo Remittance Study (KRS) 2010 provided an initial insight on the flow, use, and effects of remittances in Kosovo, especially on expenditure patterns, reservation wages, and access to education and healthcare. The survey was repeated during the peak period of Diaspora visits to Kosovo, in July-August 2011, in order to conduct a more in-depth analysis of remittances’ impact on the welfare of recipients as well as identify their savings and investment potential. The survey interviewed 8,000 households residing in Kosovo and 656 of their members and relatives (and their households) living abroad.

KOSOVO. Ištine i Zablude

Author(s): Sinan Hasani / Language(s): Croatian

Published 1986 in Zagreb by the » Centar za informacije i publicitet «. // EDITOR’s INTRODUCTION: This book from the edition "Anatomy of a Conspiracy" is entitled "Kosovo - Truths and Misconceptions", and its author is Sinan Hasani, a well-known socio-political worker and writer. Given that these are well-known events, but very complex and contradictory, the author found himself in a really difficult role, to consciously and critically comprehensively analyze the events to which he was partly a witness. It was a challenge for an excellent analyst and writer to turn the exceptionality of authentic testimony into an interesting political-sociological study. In an extensive and documented book, the author fulfilled these tasks in its entirety. By placing the events he writes about in the wider space and complexity of socio-economic and national relations, not only in the narrower area of Kosovo but also within Yugoslavia, observing Yugoslav-Albanian relations and in the broader Balkans and Europe, the author confirms his literary work equally well. talent as the book itself ranks in the good fundus of Marxist political journalism in our country.

The Situation of the Serb Minority in Kosova

Author(s): Shkëlzen Gashi / Language(s): English

Published in March, 2006 by the »Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms« (Prishtina). // „If we take into consideration the classification of democracy in fictive, formal and real democracy, we can say that Kosova is a country with formal democracy, not to say a country with fictive democracy. This is due to the fact that according to UNMIK Regulation 2001/9 (the Constitutional Framework for Provisional Self-Government) “Twenty (20) of the 120 seats in the Assembly of Kosova shall be reserved for the additional representation of non-Albanian Kosovo Communities”. This is not surprising if we bear in mind the fact that during the ‘90s, out of 130 deputies, who were to be elected in the Assembly of Kosova, only 100 were elected directly, whereas the others were to be elected based on the principle of the proportional representation of the political parties and the adequate representation of the political parties, which draw together members of the national minorities living in the “Republic of Kosova”. // Despite the fact that additional representation is a positive thing, this does mean that the situation of the Serb community in Kosova is satisfactory. On the contrary, in some parts of Kosova, the situation of the Serb community is grave. Positive discrimination may have negative effects in many cases – it seems that it has had such an effect on the Serb community in Kosova“ (Introduction)
