Mass protests in Belarus after the presidential election in 2020 showed all weaknesses of the official propaganda. The monograph characterises the tools of the cultural protest (banners, music, street art, digital forms of resistance), which exposed a deficit of truth in the relations between the government and society. They undermine and ridicule the actions undertaken by the presidential centre as well as the long-term strategy of the official propaganda. Regardless of the political outcome, the 2020 crisis will have long-lasting political, social and cultural consequences. It is an important factor in building the contemporary Belarusian identity.

The monograph is a fruit of research by representatives of a variety of academic disciplines: historians, cultural and literary studies scholars, and linguists studying Central-Eastern Europe. The polydisciplinary and multinational group of authors – scholars from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania – is united by their interest in the cultural identity of the region’s nations. The problem of the cultural history and the present of Central-Eastern Europe is presented in two perspectives: one looks at processes of shaping elements of the identity of Central-Eastern European nations, while the other offers highly-focused synchronic analyses of selected cultural phenomena.

This book, which builds upon our previous volume „Rus’ Abducted? Russia’s War over the Identity of Ukraine”, offers a clear explanation of complex mechanisms of Russia’s war against the West, along with its methods used in both the virtual and physical spaces. The book also lays bare the mechanism of power in Russia, especially her constant eagerness to provoke armed conflicts and wars. This longue durée process requires a continuous renewal and adjustment of stereotypical confrontation scenarios, which results in collisions of meanings, associated as these are with the imperialist symbolic order being bent to fit the moment’s needs.
