Precisely because there is so much to say about the political processes in the Danube region and on the Balkan Peninsula today, this book does not aim to prove, but to make it understandable. It only wants to illustrate the tragedy of a development that knows no guilt and no mistakes - but a fate; which postponed a South Slav unification at the same time as the Italian and German unification took place; which lay in the fact that the completed German unification had to pass the postponed unification of the southern Slavs, determined by closer, immediate concerns, strive for new goals and new ties. - No politics should be pursued with facts, but rather an actual course should be reproduced, which eluded the waking consciousness of historiography under the force of advancing events.
