Differentiation of human capital resources in Warmia and Mazury Region

The main aim of the article is to estimate the resources of human capital and its differentiation in the counties of Warmia and Mazury. There was applied the synthetic indicator of human capital (WZKL) on which basis there was made a hierarchy of counties. The analysis was carried out in spatial and time dimension, using data from the Local Data Bank from the Central Statistical Office and the censuses. The analysis covers 2002 and 2011. In those years the censuses were conducted, which are the only reliable source of information about education an essential component of human capital. The purpose of the study is to find answers to research questions: what is the state of human capital, what is its spatial differentiation, and what changes have occurred in the period 2002–2011 in the counties of Warmia and Mazury?

Genia Silkes (1914-1984), a teacher and cultural activist, describes in this text, written in 1948, her two meetings with Emanuel Ringelblum. The first one occurred during a selection on 6 September 1942 and the second in the Restgetto during attempts to organize armed resistance in the ghetto. Genia Silkes’s text splendidly illustrates the evolution of the memory of the Holocaust in the first postwar years and the role played in it by Emanuel Ringelblum, a figure symbolic of both the murdered Jewish intellectuals and of civilian resistance in the Warsaw ghetto and, more broadly, in the time of the Holocaust.

The article proposes a radiography of both fundamental stylistic attitudes of the arts: Classicism and Mannerism - equivalent to daytime and nighttime regime of the image, for the past five centuries.In the creation plan, the two attitudes sat behind the moments of greatness of humanity art, but in the same time of its collapse and decay. The analysis carried out showed that in the last century the balance between the two fundamental attitudes was overthrown in favor of increased tendency for subhuman exploitation, for derisory, for the marginal and for the human animality in the desire to access the success through the ugly aesthetics, promoted by some postmodernism. Contemporary consequence of the beautiful - ugly imbalance, on the one hand led to the enrichment of the means of expression but also caused confusion in the system of values. A re-humanization of art would restore the balance.

Extreme manipulations are not only found in clothing, but beyond, enciphered in the anatomy of the contemporary body.

The Agony of a Jewish Town – the Liquidation of Lublin’s Podzamcze Ghetto

On the night of 16/17 March 1942, the Germans set out to carry out Operation „Reinhardt”, the goal of which was the biological extermination of the Jewish population. The first ghetto selected for the liquidation was Lublin’s Podzamcze. The deportations can be divided into two basic stages; the first of them was completed around the end of March, when it was suspended for 2 or 3 days, and until then the action was taking place only at night. Stage II went on from 31 March to 14 April, and the deportations continued both during the day and at night. It can be assumed that the liquidation of the Podzamcze ghetto was a testing ground and the experience gained in Lublin was to be used in the liquidation of subsequent concentrations of the Jewish population.The deportations from Podzamcze ghetto were preceded by actions aimed at the logistic preparation of the operation. The ghetto was divided into Part A and Part B, the latter being surrounded with barbed wire and set aside for the Jews classified as „useful”, with further rules being enacted that restricted the place of stay, the stamping of labour certificates was introduced and all the Judenrat sections and institutions were moved into the ghetto.The liquidation of the ghetto itself took a very brutal course, with many Jews being beaten up or shot dead inside its walls. The operation was performed by German units aided by auxiliary units from Trawniki, made up of Soviet POWs. Approximately 28,000 Jews were taken to the Bełżec death camp, while about 1000 were murdered on the spot. Just over 4,000 Jews were officially moved to the Restgetto on Majdan Tatarski, with about as many getting there illegally.
