The theme of this study is to look through, identify and describe the circumstances that led to formation of the scientific knowledge of the geographical identification of flows of some rivers in Slovakia in the Middle Ages. The result is a recognition that to the lower, middle and upper streams of the rivers got the same name - hydronym. In the 13th-14th century settlers founded in the valleys of lower, but mainly in the upper parts of some rivers new villages, named by traditional names of the rivers. It happened at different times and in different locality, as in the case of Nitra, Važec, Hronec, Poprad, Torysa, Ondavka and other settlements. In the study we pay attention to group of the biggest rivers in Slovakia.

Obraz Košíc v slovenskej historiografii v rokoch 1918 – 1938

The aim of the article is to reconstruct the image of the town of Košice produced by members of Slovak historiography, and by Czech historians working in Slovakia in the period of existence of the First Czechoslovak Republic 1918 – 1938. The article focuses on answering the questions: how was the „magyarized“ image of the town „slovakized“ by Czechoslovak historians, how they refl ected on the pre-Trianon Magyarization of the town, how they referred to importance of Košice in the Hungarian nation narrative; which processes and events in the history of Košice were emphasised, and which were obeyed. The article deals with variety of strategies in picturing the town and in reinterpretation of the respective historical events in its history. It also attempts to evaluate what role Košice played in the constructed Czechoslovak national discourse. Finally, the article aims to explain reasons, why Košice in the inter-war period, despite becoming a strategic metropolitan hub of East Slovakia, was left in the peripheral position in the context of the Slovak national narrative.

The article examines the contribution of the Czech Revival philologist, publisher and poet Vaclav Hanka (1791–1861) to the Czech-Bulgarian cultural relations and contacts. The author analyzes in more detail his short translation called A Short History of the Slavonic Peoples in Ancient Times (1818), based on the Friedrich Christian Ruhs (1781–1820) book Handbuch der Geschichte des Mittelalters (1816). The chapter devoted to the history of medieval Bulgaria is the first specialized Bulgarian study published in Czech. Hanka has not written a whole bulgarian article on his own (except for the Bulgarian supplements in his research in the field of palaeoslavistics) and is restricted to resolving works of his colleagues and excerpts from the correspondence of his friends, mainly the Russian Slavonic scholar Izmail Ivanovich Srenevski (1812–1880). Nevertheless, for many Bulgarians, he was invaluable advisor during their trips to Bohemia (eg. Ivan Andreev Bogorov, Konstantin Dimitriev Petkovič, Ivan Vasilev Shopov, Petăr Beron, Konstantin Pavlov, Dimităr Stefanov Mutev or Nathanail Zografski) and discoverer and publisher of “Kralovedvorski manuscript” and “Zelenogorski manuscript” pseudo old Czech poetic mystification of the early 19th century, which are considered precious monuments from the 13th and 10th century (to their Bulgarian translators – besides the already-named Petkovič and Shopov – belong Teodosi (Bogdan) Ikonomov, Rayko Zhinzifov, George Benev and Atanas T. Iliev).

The article examines the history and the genealogy of Karlıoğlu (Karlızade) family and the important role that family members played in the complex dynamics of Ottoman politics in the second half of the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries. It examines in detail the founding role of the waqf, established by Karlıoğlu Ali bey at the turn of the fifteenth century, for the establishment and the development of the town of Karlovo and the utmost importance of the pious foundation for the affirmation of the town as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the region of Göpsa. The analysis and arguments, presented in the article are based on European and Ottoman narrative and documentary primary sources, many which hitherto unused by the related scholarship.

CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS IN AN OTTOMAN CITY: THE FORMATION OF THE SOCIETY OF EARLY OTTOMAN THESSALONIKI

Thessaloniki was the biggest city conquered by the Ottomans before Istanbul. Furthermore, it was conquered by force. Thus, this city is a good example for researchers to understand how the Ottoman state transformed a Byzantine metropolis into an Ottoman one, starting from a zero point – in terms of the population – in 1430. This paper, based on a meticulous analysis of the three extant Ottoman tax registers of the first Ottoman century and a variety of other sources, tries to discern the urban and demographic development until ca. 1530, when the Ottomanization process had been accomplished and Thessaloniki became an Ottoman metropolis, having, together with Edirne, the highest population in the Balkans.

Robert DJIDJIAN - The Secret of Geniality (III)

The NOEMA Journal continues to publish, in a series, the book THE SECRET OF GENIALITY (Yerevan, Armenia, Noyan Tapan Printing House, 2002) by our colleague Robert Djidjian, not only because we all must know the philosophical research and creation (in our domain of epistemology and philosophy of science and technology) from a wider geographic area than that provided by the established fashion in virtue of both extra-scientific reasons and a yet obsolete manner to communicate and value the research; but also because the book as such is living, challenging and very instructive. The title of the book is suggestive enough to make us to focus on an old age question: the dialectic of the insight, of the discovery, its psychology moving between flashes of intuitions and cognizance stored in memory, and its logic of composition of knowledge from hypotheses to their demonstration and verification. The realm of science is most conducive to the understanding of this dialectic and the constitution of the ideas which are the proofs of what is the most certain for humans: the “world 3”, as Popper called the kingdom of human results of their intellection, and though transient and perishable in both their uniqueness and cosmic fate, the only certain proof of the reason to be of homo sapiens in the frame of multiversal existence. Therefore, creation is the secret of the human geniality, and how to create science is a main part of this secret.

Периодизация на българската средновековна история

The article presents for the first time theoretical argumentation for the periodization of Bulgarian medieval history. The attempts for such periodization, which are reflected in the content and structure of the summarized scientific publications on the history of medieval Bulgaria from the end of the 19th century to the present day, are reviewed. It has to be concluded that state-political history is a dominant marker. The lower boundary of the Bulgarian medieval history goes back to the time from the earliest history of the Bulgarians and Slavs before the Great Migration of the Peoples, and the upper boundary is the end of the XVII century. In conclusion, the Bulgarian medieval history can be divided in three main periods: Early, High and Late Middle ages.

The text aims to present a translation of a document from September 1451, defining the boundaries of the land of Krichim as mulk of the Grand Vizier Chanderli Khalil Pasha, contextualizing the information in it with the published and commented so far about the region as the economic base of the mulk. Waqf, as well as a horizontal structure in which interactions between the settlement and the network of religious infrastructure are visible.

Philosofia Picta.On the Reception of the Neo-Platonism of Florence in Buda.

La présente étude analyse une enluminure du bréviaire de Domonkos Kálmáncsehi (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, Cod. Lat. 446), daté vers 1481 et rédigé à la cour du roi Matthias Corvinus. Sur le f. 88v, une image décorative et surprenante a été insérée dans une série d’illustrations consacrées à la Vierge : deux couples nus font l’amour autour d’une fontaine. L’auteure considère qu’il ne peut pas s’agir de l’amour vulgaire et pécheur (nuditas criminalis), ni d’une fonction strictement ornementale. Puisque la cour de Buda était influencée par les modes de la Renaissance florentine, notamment par le néoplatonisme de Ficino, il est fort possible que l’image doive être décryptée selon l’interprétation de Panovsky sur la diffusion de la conception ficinienne de l’amour dans les milieux humanistes, surtout si l’on considère que l’un des amis de Ficino, Francesco Bandini, était arrivé à la cour de Buda en 1476. Dans ce cas, les deux couples enlacés ne représenteraient pas l’amour charnel en tant que péché, mais la force génératrice de l’amour sur terre. Selon l’interprétation ficinienne du Symposium, l’amour est l’expression même de l’émanation du pouvoir divin, qui crée le monde dans sa beauté.
