This special issue seeks to enrich readers’ understandings of the transnational family practices and relations of selected migrant groups of a predominantly Muslim background in a number of Western contexts. It presents theoretically and empirically grounded studies that investigate how these family practices and ties are transnationally shaped, navigated and experienced by different family members. It focuses on two aspects of family life: marriage and the second generation’s aspirations and transnational experiences. Under the first theme, this special issue examines how marriage, migration and kinship interplay in transnationally shaped social fields where multiple legal and normative systems intersect in the lives of migrants. With regards to the second theme, the issue investigates how the children of migrants navigate and experience transnational family norms, ties and practices. Throughout the issue, individual articles shed light on the gendered dimensions of the different family practices and experiences.

We should begin with thanking all our authors and reviewers in this issue. According to UNHCR data, over 50 percent of Syrian refugees in Turkey were children. Refugee children is also on the global agenda. According to Eurostat, it was reported that 51% of 45,300 refugee children who arrive in the EU countries were of Afghan origin, while 16 percent were of Syrian descent. It was also reported that 70 percent of asylum applications in Germany, Sweden and Hungary were in this category. Hence children deserves a special attention in migration and refugee studies.

The articles included in this issue of Remittance Review reinforce our continued efforts in maturation of theory in the study of remittance practices (see Sirkeci, Cohen, Ratha, 2012 and Ratha and Sirkeci, 2010). The themes addressed go well beyond concerns with the physical nature of remittances, direction of flows and outcomes of remittance practices in an economic vacuum. In fact, the authors whose articles are included here, work from the belief that remittances are best understood within a political economy framework that emphasizes global market forces, pays careful attention to how remittances are embedded in culture and society, and recognizes how remittances as well as migration influence, and are influenced by, kinship.

The systemic character of entities implies their being formed of discrete elements whose conjunction generates hierarchical structures, functions, forces, and roles. While the observation and study of entities entails their segregation with respect to certain sets of criteria, their understanding follows from their thorough comprehension, in plenary connection with the environment of which they are component, product, and factor.Having the profound role of bringing the human being in the state of knowing and understanding the Universe, science (including the methodology that invents and governs paths, and the apparatus that makes the entire endeavour operational) follows this model of specialized division. Starting from the initial common state, science develops its observations by identifying and describing the reality and its specialized components, in accordance with how they are structured and function, constantly tailoring its means of investigations to the genetic, structural, and functional peculiarities of those aspects. The completion and evolution of science are consequent to the assimilation of this approach beyond the interdisciplinary level, and arise from the conjunction of scientific knowledge, methods, and instruments, aimed at reflecting reality in its entirety and integrality. This outcome requires a recurrent reconsideration and revision of the organism of science.

The big pharmaceutical companies spend on average 800 million dollars to develop a molecule from the stage of “idea” to the market launch; the small and biotechnology companies spend about 250 million up to 500 million dollars. Most of these expenses are for both clinical trials and marketing. In the field of psychiatry, the first controlled clinical trial was conducted in 1922, by Nicholas Kopeloff, a bacteriologist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, along with the psychiatrist Clarence O'Cheney.

Equity in health care financing and equity in access to health care have been long established as guiding principles in Europe. Although European patients are accustomed to pay for health care commodities, such as pharmaceuticals, extensive patient charges for public health care services are uncommon. Free-of-charge access to essential health care services is even seen as a patient’s right in some countries. Nevertheless, the scarcity of public resources, combined with the global economic crises, puts pressure on European governments to set new priorities. As a result, charges for public health care services are being extended in Europe as a means to shift health care costs to consumers and to reduce the need of government funding.
