Turkey is a special country. Sandwiched between Europe and Asia,Turkey is a secular Muslim country that has undergone many transitions,including from a major source of international migrants to a major destination for them. About five percent of the 80 million people born in Turkey are living outside the country, including over half in Germany. Meanwhile, up to five percent of people in Turkey were born elsewhere, including over half born in Syria.

The Slovak community of historians is presently experiencing a relatively rapid change of generations. The professional development of historiography is more and more influenced by the generation of 30 – 40-year-old historians. This is the result of a specific development related to the changes in the society after 1989. At the beginning of the 1990s a considerable portion of scientists left the academic environment. Many of them moved to the private sector or got employed in lucrative positions within the civil service (e.g. diplomatic corps). Researchers compromised by excessive ideological commitment in the previous regime had to leave scientific teams, while others became the victims of radical cuts in employee numbers particularly in the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS). However, the situation changed in the second half of the 1990s. New universities were established and required human resources. A better financial situation in the SAS led to the opening of new job positions. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries (not only) historical research institutions took on an unusually great number of young scientists. This process was also well reflected in the largest research institution dealing with the history – the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Although roots of franchising can be found in the 10th century (King Edgar and beer places) and in the first half of the 19th century in Germany, the first representatives of modern franchising can be found in the USA in the second part of the 19th century (Singer Sewing Center, General Motors and Coca-Cola) (Erceg, 2017). In the second part of the 20th century, there was a new phase of franchising development – business format franchise, which was introduced by McDonald’s and Ray Kroc. Business format franchising gained popularity and was spread worldwide by American fast food restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, etc.). These fast food restaurant franchisors demonstrated to other service industries how to standardize and replicate successful business systems (Alon, 2014). Franchising entered countries in Eastern Europe at the end of 1980s and the beginning of 1990s when those countries switched to a market economy and allowed entrance of foreign companies and capital. It was then that the franchising revolution started, mainly by foreign franchisors entering the country, thus initiating actions of local entrepreneurs who started using franchising as a growth strategy as well.

The idea for this book came from the pleasure we derived from reading another publication – the Czech edition of In Defence of History (Argo, 2019) by the well-known British historian Sir Richard J. Evans. We were inspired by many things including a passage where the English historian describes his own work on the cholera epidemic in Hamburg and its “interweaving narrative and causal argument” (p. 130, London 2012). Evans describes how he gradually approached the final structure and how he searched for the right way to best explain the story and its causes: in the end he decided against a simple chronological story and instead created twelve parallel causal narratives which he skillfully interweaved in order to explain the causes of this phenomenon. He also used a large number of sources while simultaneously being able to generate a growing sense of suspense and excitement. He later talked about his approach in general terms: “Most historical narratives consist of a mixture of revealed, reworked, constructed and deconstructed narratives from the historical past and from the historian’s own mind. We start with a rough-hewn block of stone, and chisel away at it until we have a statue. The statue was not waiting there to be discovered, we made it ourselves, and it would have been perfectly possible for us to have made a different statue from the one we finally created. On the other hand, we are constrained not only by the size and shape of the original stone, but also by the kind of stone it is; an incompetent sculptor not only runs the risk of producing an unconvincing statue that does not much resemble anything, but also of hammering or chiselling too hard, or the wrong way, and shattering the stone altogether.” (p. 133, London 2012)

In this book I would like to explore the ‘idea of a university’ and specific modern developments both abroad and in the Czech Republic through dialogues with prominent Czech academics. The sample of respondents was chosen to represent the most important Czech university institutions, with people from different generations and academic backgrounds being given the opportunity to answer the questions. It also has to be admitted that they are acquaintances and in some cases even friends of the interviewer.

Autoři ve svých příspěvcích představují parciální výsledky svých empirických výzkumů, a to především přehledové studie, ve kterých shrnují a hodnotí současný stav poznání ve vybrané výzkumné oblasti a rovněž studie, které nastiňují aktuální výsledky jejich disertačních výzkumů.

Longtemps battue en brèche ou carrément chassée par l’écrasante idéologie du progrès linéaire, par la culture de la vitesse et par l’obsession de l’efficacité quantitative, la lenteur revient se glisser dans notre vision du monde et timidement raviver nos principes originaires. Où allons-nous si vite? La précipitation est-elle synonyme de qualité de vie, de travail plus satisfaisant, de grandes idées ou découvertes? Les (franc-)maçons moyenâgeux ne se souciaient guère d’achever les cathédrales dans le courant de leur vie, ils ne travaillaient pas dans le temps, pour le temps, mais bien pour l’éternité. Autrement, on en aurait certainement perdu les traces…
