The author describes forms of international cooperation in the years 1912–2011 of the Polish Statistical Association (PTS). In the first period of activity, the main form of cooperation was the participation of PTS members in the congresses of the International Statistical Institute and the Econometric Society. After 1989, the PTS organized and sponsored international conferences and scientific seminars in Poland. Particular attention is devoted to four statisticians, who played a prominent role in international activities and the development of the Society as well as Polish statistics, i.e. Professors Jerzy Neyman, Jan Piekałkiewicz and Jan Czekanowski and also to dr. Jan Wiśniewski. The study highlighted the role of a magazine published in English, ”Statistics in Transition” (later ”Statistics in Transition – new series”) in PTS international cooperation.

This article focuses on the popular-science programme MythBusters to illustrate the various ways in which it employs science. On the basis of my analysis of these, I, first, argue that the popculture of the early twenty-first century generates products in which multiple uses of scientific activity are a standard. Second, it is also substantiated that this multiplication of the uses of science translates into it being forfeited in favour of entertainment even in broadcasts that are, or at least seem, targeted at it.

The science play is a well-established genre of dramatic writing in the Englishspeaking theatrical tradition. This paper discusses three full-length science plays by the prominent British playwright Tom Stoppard. These are Hapgood, Arcadia, and The Hard Problem. The plays are based on popular science sources and offer their audience an access to science. After providing a brief history of the science play and the science show, the paper shows that Stoppard develops the dramatic and theatrical traditions by involving science on the textual (giving popularised scientific knowledge in the form of dialogised lectures) and performative levels (demonstrating or illustrating science on stage), primarily to turn it into a metaphor of human behaviour. Hapgood and Arcadia further engage with science on the structural level, thus becoming thought experiments reflecting upon science. The most recent play, The Hard Problem, develops textual and performative strategies related to science but ceases to experiment with the form, leaving more space for the audience to draw ethical conclusions.
