On 26th and 27th June 2015 in Sofia was held an international conference, sponsored by the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology, American University in Bulgaria and American Research Center in Sofia. The conference was dedicated to the Ottoman Balkans and to the agent of faith in particular. The papers presented highlighted the following problematic areas: religious policy and interaction; judges and lawyers; donors; Orthodox Christian priests and monks; the “other” Christian and Sufis; conversion; women converts.

The 11th International Congress of South East European Studies was held under the motto South East Europe and the European integration: political, socio-economic and cultural aspects between 31 August and 4 September 2015 at the Hilton Sofia Hotel. The high level research forum was organized by the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology (IBSCT), Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS), under the auspices of UNESCO. During the opening session messages of greeting were delivered on behalf of Academician Stefan Vodenicharov, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Science and Chairman of the Honorary Committee of the Congress, as well as on behalf of Ms. Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia. The participants in the forum were welcomed by Prof. Kostadin Kostadinov, Deputy Minister of Education and Science. In his speech at the opening of the Congress Prof. Alexander Kostov, D.Sc., Director of IBSCT and President of the Organizing Committee, quoted data about the attendance of the Balkan Studies congresses held in Sofia respectively in 1966, 1989 and 2015. His analysis revealed strong indications of a drastic change faced by humanitarian research after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the challenges that have to be met by the researchers in this important sphere for mankind.The 11th International Congress of South-East European Studies gathered in Sofia the global academic elite in the area of South-East European studies. It was attended by over 250 participants and guests from 26 countries: both eminent specialists from the Balkan region and other parts of the world, and many young scholars. These included a large number of collaborators from IBSCT and other BAS institutes. The participants in the 18 sections presented interesting papers dedicated to important topics in the areas of history, economics, linguistics, literature, music and other spheres associated with the development of the Balkancountries and nations.
