The publication by Czech historian Zbyněk Zeman and his German colleague Rainer Karlsch "Na uranu záleží! Středoevropský uran v mezinárodní politice 1900–1960" is a translation of the English edition "Uranium Matters! Central European Uranium in International Politics, 1900–1960" (Budapest – New York, Central European University Press 2008). The original was published in German in 2002. As a result of this time gap, the work is, in some respects, outdated compared to current research. It deals with the history of mining and processing of uranium ore in the Erzgebirge region near the Czech-German border, but as the review points out, notin a comparative perspective. While the central Czech chapter mainly describes the forced labour camps, the life of political prisoners and the communist persecution associated with uranium mining in the Jáchymov mines after 1948, the parallel German chapter is more comprehensive and focuses on the activities of the Soviet uranium joint-stock company Wismut in the political and social context of the German Democratic Republic. Nevertheless, the merging of Czech and (East) German uranium history into one volume, from its very beginnings, and setting it into the context of international security policy, is considered by the reviewer as the book’s greatest contribution.

"Diener zweier Herren: DDR-Juristen zwischen Recht und Macht" [Servants of Two Masters: GDR Lawyers Between Law and Power] written by German-born American legal scholar Inga Markovits, discusses the history of and everyday life at the Humboldt University Law School in Berlin between 1945 and 1989. Markovits examines the development of the East Berlin Law School and its teachers from three different perspectives. First, she traces the school’s adjustment to the communist dictatorship and its ideology, which was completed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Second, she seeks the signs of reluctance to make such adaptations. Third, she attempts to capture the declining belief in the idea of socialism and communism among the faculty and among lawyers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in general. According to Markovits, the GDR was not a state governed by the rule of law and its law did not necessarily create justice. However, it dampened arbitrariness and created an order within a non-democratic state in which justice could be exercised. According to the reviewer, the author did not sufficiently consider the exclusivity of the position of the East Berlin Law School, which resulted from both systemic and general factors. The monograph, however, is based on extensive source research and represents a serious, valuable, highly competent and stimulating contribution to the understanding of East German legal scholarship and its actors.

A review article entitled “Memory and… Care” is an in-depth discussion of the book by Sławomir Jacek Żurek Odpamiętywanie polsko-żydowskie. Szkice – Studia – Interpretacje [The Polish-Jewish de-remembering: Essays – Studies – Interpretations] published in 2021 by The Learned Society of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The said publicaton by the Lublin-based scholar contains a multi-layered reception of the most recent findings in the field of memory studies, which at the same time purports to utilise them in the process of reading particular literary texts dealing with Polish-Jewish relations. Żurek directs his interpretative endeavour among others at: the poetic dialogue between Franciszka Arnsztajnowa and Józef Czechowicz, the ouevre of Arnold Słucki, the particular vision of Poland sustained in texts by Jewish émigré poets, and at the contemporary literary narratives regarding the Shoah, which oftentimes enter into popocultural dialogue with traditional Jewish topoi. The author’s main claim seems to be that more than 30 years of working through memory within the framework of historical, cultural and literary analyses, has not only hepled to restore correct proportions of the Polish Jews’ contribution to the Polish culture, but most of all to verify the stereotypes pertaining to the Jews’ relationships with non-Jews. The publication has been commended by scholars focused on studies of Polish-Jewish relations and the memory of the Holocaust, while the present review article is a critical discussion of theses put forward by Żurek.
