The present article provides insight into early modern Ukrainian Latin prose and, drawing on the writings of Yan Yuzefovich, Yoanikiy Bazilovich, Erasm Sikst and Yosif Ruts’kiy, discusses its artisic and informative value. This is the first time that the Neo-Latin literature of Ukraine is presented to the scholarly public in Slovakia in a broader historical perspective.

Dominik Mokosh (Mokos), a member of the Franciscan order and a missionary preacher, active in various regions of the then Slovakia in the middle of 18th century wrote 5 volumes of sermons in pre-Bernolak's Slovak. The study analyses two volumes of this sermons, which were also full of Latin insertions: maxims, quotations from the Bible and patristic literature. D. Mokosh used the moral authority of the Ecclesiastical fathers when he wanted to support the message of the sermon, but his translations of these quotes, although they' d preserved the original meaning, were often enriched by new elements (e.g. adjectives), which were absent in the original text.

The present paper deals with literary onomastics. Different types of proper names occuring in the Latin work of Anonymus known as Gesta Hungarorum are analyzed here. The author examines how these names are rendered in Slovak, either by way of translation or that of paraphrase. The Slovak reader has at his disposal the work's complete translation by the historian Vincent Miicska so that he can follow its linguistic, historical and translational phenomena not only in the Latin original but also in the new Slovak translation. The author's attention is concentrated mainly on onomastic phenomena. The original is undoubtedly the most famous literary work of Hungary from the period of the 11th to the 13th centuries. The Slovak translation was awarded as "The best book design of the year 2000" at the Leipzig International Book Fair.

The author of the present paper analyzes the ethnographic accomplishments of the linguist Samuel Cambel, its meaning and influence on further development and orientation of folkloristic field reserch. Evaluating the views of individual folklorists and linguists in regard to the work of Samuel Cambel as collector, the author tries to classify Cambel's folkloristic collection within the scope of the Slovak folkloristic research.

The synthesis the hitherto gained knowledge that have been collected within the VEGA projects No. 2-4080-97 (1997 -1999) and No. 2-7031-20 (2000 - 2002) is the intention of the submitted Project. The main aim to achieve is to create a picture of the way of living and traditional culture of Slovak minorities based on scientifically gained and processed data to testify at the same time bonds with cultural tradition of Slovakia. Its should also witness about that what become part of their cultural heritage and ethnic identity.

The paper deals with the question of mutual cultural relationships between the Slovak Republic and the Independent State of Croatia in the period from 1941 to 1945. Slovaks as well as Croatians were part of multi-ethnic states after the First World War. During the inter-war years, both nations struggled for their emancipation. However, immidiately after their independent states had become reality, both aligned themselves with the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis and concluded such treaties as to restrict their sover¬eignty. The author provides an insight into the process of developing Slovak-Craotian cultural cooperation influenced by the then political situation.

The author of the present study deals with the ethnic factors in the development of Soviet humanities, especlally in the field of linguistics connected with Marr‘s linguistic doctrine. The study is based on several relatively new treatises on the problems linked to the relation of early Soviet régime towards the weakening of the Russian national element in official Soviet administrative bodies and the strengthening of everything non-Russian, e. g. Latvians, Jews etc. The case of Marr and marrism is closely connected with the Caucasian ethnic impact (famous and fatal triangle Marr – Stalin – Chikobava). The two stages in the development of the oficial Soviet attitude to national and ethnic problems in the sphere of humanities manifest the manifold and ambiguous importance of Marr’s theories as well as the complicated strategical steps of former Soviet power.

In the following paper the author has performed a linguistic analysis of several chosen sexist remarks by Janusz Korwin-Mikke in order to prove how stereotypically women are regarded by the famous politician. This conservative man treats stereotypes as a proof of good order and fights to prevent women from trying to change what for thousands of years has given the general order and happiness for male sex and, in his opinion, for female sex. Significant for the author’s paper has been the importance of antifeminist’s texts within pragmatic and semantic aspect. The paper has concentrated on solely the linguistic aspect - in detail there have been discussed among other things: aphorisms and neologisms which are used by the controversial politician. In the paper the author has tried to prove that J. Korwin- Mikke’s language provokes and insults the opposite sex.

This article discusses the question of the Polish nation's self-definition in the Positivist period both in belles-lettres and in journalism, which were dependent to a great extent on the colonial discourse. It is argued that crucial metaphors of “wildness,” “savageness” or “backwardness” stem from orientalising labels created by the colonisers. Examination of this issue requires some basic introduction to historical and anthropological ideas which date back to the Age of Enlightenment. The aim of this paper is to shed light – by analysing literature examples such as Ludwik Powidaj, Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Maria Konopnicka, Eliza Orzeszkowa and Henryk Sienkiewicz – on the so called “colonial trauma” that has condemned the Polish image to resentful ideology. Furthermore, the paper will provide arguments in favour of subscribing to the postcolonial studies in Central and Eastern Europe.

This paper concerns three significant concepts in Maria Komornicka’s writings: body, spirit and gender. The first two are closely related to each other, thus initial paragraphs are devoted to them both. On the basis of these reflections, I draw some conclusion about the image of gender created by the poet. The notion of gender is analysed in terms of Young Poland discourse of gender and from the perspective of modern methodologies: feminist criticism as well as gender and queer studies. This paper aims at encouraging the reader to reinterpret M. Komornicka’s output with contemporary awareness.
