Author(s): Gojko Rikalović,Dejan S. Molnar / Language(s): English / Issue: 30/2019

Keywords: development indicators; missed opportunities; quality of governance; Kosovo and Metohija; Serbia;

This paper is about basic development trends in Kosovo and Metohija during the period 2003-2017. The focus is on the missed opportunities for increasing economic and social well-being in the KiM area. Besides this, an important aspect of the analysis carried out in this paper relates to the quality of the state governance and building institutional capacities. In the empirical analysis, three scenarios were used to show the backlog of the KiM area, i.e. the lost GDP per capita of Kosovo caused by the inability to take advantage of the wider space of our country. The results of the research show that special attention has to be paid to the rule of law, the efficiency of governance and the control over corruption in Kosovo. The integration of Kosovo with the educational, research and economic space of Serbia and the EU could lead to the overall progress of our country as a whole.

INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY RANKINGS AS A SOCIO-ECONOMIC PHENOMENON AND A NEW INSTRUMENT OF GLOBAL GOVERNMENT SOFT POWER

Author(s): Marijana Nikolić / Language(s): English / Issue: 30/2019

Keywords: international country rankings; soft power; global government;

One of the fundamental determinants of the last wave of the globalization process is the emergence and expansion of international country (economy) rankings. The popularity of these lists is increasing day by day. However, despite their widespread use, the existing body of scientific knowledge about this complex socioeconomic phenomenon is modest, at best. Since international country rankings represent a relatively new phenomenon and an “industry” characterized by explosive growth, the paper will present the basic theoretical foundations of the phenomenon, with particular emphasis on the economic dimension. The concept will be analyzed through the context of mechanisms that determine the appearance and functioning of global society today. It will also be noted that the international ranking lists which use the economic systems of countries as the basic unit of analysis, i.e. certain elements of the given system, are a suitable instrument for shaping an economic reality and development flows of a modern society in accordance with the goals of certain interest groups and centers of power. The findings that will be presented in this paper constitute a prerequisite and a starting point for extensive research on the issues of international country rankings, especially regarding the impact of this phenomenon on the economic sphere of society.

Less sculptural more intellectual: conceptualizing landscape in the architecture of 1990s and 2000s

Author(s): Gülşah Güleç / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2023

Keywords: architectural design; landscape; landscaping architecture; ground; field;

The aim of this paper is to discuss the radical shift which emerges in the 1990s and enhances architecture in the 2000s by turning it into a less sculptural more intellectual field of design. Hence, architects rather focus on ground than figure in design projects. This leads them to interrogate the conventional relationships between figure and ground enabling figure to dominate the ground in architecture for decades. They discover the mutual relationships between figure and ground, and design grounded structures instead of ungrounded sculptures. These artificial structures seem like the extensions of the natural landscape, as such the conceptual and categorical distinction between artificial and natural blurs in architecture. Another conceptual blurring emerges between the concepts of landscape, ground, and field. These are generally used as interchangeable concepts, but landscape encompasses ground and field, making it a more comprehensive concept for architects. It is revealed in the paper that landscape is a re-emerging concept which refers to the conceptual shift from form and function to flow and force in architecture. Landscape, therefore, awaits to be explored as a field of flows and forces by even more architects in this century in which cities are characterized by sculptural forms and objects.

Keywords: the natural smallpox; Polish health policy; vaccinations; quarantine; isolation;

Great epidemics constituted one of the many important factors shaping the fate of humansocieties, from prehistory to modern times. Long-lasting pandemic epidemics, covering large areasand causing incalculable losses, were of great importance in history. They contributed to a previously unprecedented measurability, and thus a significant decrease in the population density. They left their mark on the political, economic, and economic structure of many cultures. It is worth noting that the most common diseases in epidemic form include syphilis, leprosy, bubonic plague, typhoid and spotted fever, smallpox, measles, influenza, tuberculosis, cholera, distemper, and dysentery. The vast majority of these came to light during the medieval and early modern periods, when hygiene and the general standard of living raised many concerns. The paper given was written to investigate the level of effectiveness of Polish health policy during the smallpox pandemic in Wrocław.

Drawing on notions of authority as described by Stephen Greenblatt with reference to Renaissance drama and travel writing, of love and obedience explored by William Shakespeare in The Tempest and Thomas Harriot in A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia, this paper argues that playwrights and travellers to the New World find themselves discoursively connected in imagining, describing and colonising America in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Focusing on the idea of theatre that moves beyond the scope of drama and permeates other fields of writing, the paper discusses rhetorical tropes and commonplaces by means of which literary traditions and overseas ventures address encounters in the New World.

Keywords: Apostolus Christinopolitanus; Acts of the Apostles; Apostolic Letters; codi-cology; Kievan Rus; National Museum in Kraków

One of the important Cyrillic medieval manuscripts from Kievan Rus is the Apostolus Christinopolitanus – a 12th-century codex which is now separated into two parts that are preserved (though some fragments have been lost) in Kyiv (Institute of Manuscript of V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, since 1927) and Lviv (History Museum of Lviv, since 1948). This article discusses four parchment folia from Kraków (The Princes Czartoryski Library, Poland) discovered in July 2020. Paleographical, orthographical, linguistic and textological features indicate that this section is the previously lost part of the Apostolus Christinopolitanus (excerpts from Act 13,5–20, 15,29–16,4, 1Tim 4,8–5,4 and 2Tim 1,10–2,4). The Kraków folia are the continuation of the Kyiv part and the beginning and final part of the Lviv part of the codex. The Kraków part was detached before 1888, when the manuscript was shown to the public at the Lviv Stauropegion Institute Exhibition and described and foliated for the catalogue by Antonij Petruševič. This article contains photocopies of all of the newly-discovered fragments.
