Analysing a major risk factor for the quality of the Bistrița River: mining activities in the Suceava County

Analysing a major risk factor for the quality of the Bistrița River: mining activities in the Suceava County

Author(s): Ruxandra Ionce / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2022

Keywords: water quality; mine waters; mining sites; risk evaluation matrix; water pollution;

Mining has been one of the main drivers of the economy in the Suceava County. However, both during and after the cessation of mining activities, in addition to incorrect or incomplete closure procedures, pollution events have been recorded, as mine waters continue to be discharged into the dense hydrographic network around the Bistrița River. The Bistrița River, the most important watercourse along the mining perimeters analysed, collects all the waters that cross the contaminated sites and carry along pollutants that not only affect the water quality, but also the aquatic ecosystems and, indirectly, human health. The present paper sets out to analyse the influence of the polluted waters carried by the Puciosu, Crucea, Isipoaia and Neagra Șarului creeks based on a quantitative evaluation of specific indicators and a qualitative risk evaluation matrix.

Sensitivity of the Ramsey’s Regression Specification Error Term Test on the Degree of Nonlinearity of the Functional Form

Author(s): Christos Christodoulou-Volos,Dikaios Tserkezos / Language(s): English / Issue: 79/2023

Keywords: Ramsey RESET test; Monte Carlo simulation; regression specification;

The present paper aims to demonstrate that the Ramsey’s Regression Specification Error Term Test (RESET) is very sensitive to the degree of nonlinearity between the variables of the under-specification functional form. This widely used test, for testing the functional specification of a model, is based on the notion that if nonlinear combinations of the explanatory variables have any power in explaining the predictor, the model is mis-specified and the data generating mechanism might be approximated by a nonlinear functional form. Using Monte Carlo techniques, we find that the power of the Ramsey’s RESET test is highly influenced and related with the degree of nonlinearity between the dependent and the independent variables of the under-specification functional form.

A Household’s Preferences Vary Depending on Whether Incomes Are Permanent or Temporary: A Solution to the Time-Inconsistency Problem and Equity-Premium Puzzle

Author(s): Harashima Taiji / Language(s): English / Issue: 79/2023

Keywords: equity premium; permanent income; risk aversion; temporary income; time inconsistency; time preference;

A household’s preferences are usually assumed not to vary temporally or depending on the objects to which they are applied, but this assumption is often inconsistent with empirical estimates, for example, with the time-inconsistency problem of the time preference rate and the equity-premium puzzle. I show that these inconsistencies are generated because a household’s preferences vary depending on whether they are applied to permanent or temporary incomes. Preferences applied to permanent incomes are anchored to the steady state or a balanced growth path, but those for temporary incomes are not. Hence, the former is fixed and unchanged, but the latter can take various values depending on conditions.

Keywords: returns to education; wage differentials; public–private; Europe;

The returns to schooling are estimated for 28 European and Central Asian countries using the Mincerian function. Our results show that while the public sector pays on average more than the private sector, the effect of education on earnings is stronger in the private sector. However, the returns to tertiary education are higher in the private sector.

Financial Literacy, Financial Behaviors, and Financial Crises: The Case of Lebanon

Author(s): Robert Mesrob DERMESROBIAN / Language(s): English / Issue: 79/2023

Keywords: financial literacy; financial behaviors; financial crises; Lebanese financial crisis;

The years-long academic discussion on financial literacy confirms that it promotes sound financial behaviors and increases financial inclusion. In this research work, I check if the latter still holds true during times of financial crises. I take the case of Lebanon, a country going through multiscale crises. By running two sets of surveys and using previous research data to answer my three research questions by using different statistical techniques, I find that regardless of people’s claims, only males acquire financial knowledge from the crises. I also find that people’s behaviors change throughout the financial crises in which previously advocated behaviors become redundant. I conclude my research by providing scholars and researchers with some opportunities for future research as on-topic discussion is scarce and vital to be done during such times.

Author(s): Ayine Nigo,Vincent Gibogwe / Language(s): English / Issue: 79/2023

Keywords: foreign direct investment; economic growth; absorptive capacity; human capital; market liberalization;

This study contributes to the literature on financial efficiency and growth. We show that banking development exerts a statistically significant and positive impact on local economic growth. We use the ARDL method to find the impact of institutional financial quality on agriculture sector growth in 14 Sub-Saharan African countries from 1990 to 2020. Our results show that land, rural population, and per capita agricultural income growth have long-run and significant (at 1% level) causal effects on the magnitude of agricultural value added as a percentage of GDP.

Keywords: Scenic aesthetics; Belgian theatre; theatrical language; interdisciplinarity;

I will not present here an inventory of the picturesque Belgian aesthetics, but I will try to shed light on the phenomena and mechanisms by which new types of picturesque creative processes were established in Belgium in the early 1980. In order to understand them and to perceive what underlies the diversity of aesthetic forms they take, it is necessary to understand in what historical context they appeared, that is, aesthetic, socio-political and economic. And for that, we cannot ignore the very origin of this small country.

Diversity in universality

Diversity in universality

Keywords: marionettes; living body; electronic body; actor; public;

Globalization is a necessity of the time we are going through, because only by joining a whole can we stand out as individuals and preserve the foundation of our being. Let's not interpret globalization in the form of a process of cancellation, but rather of supporting identity, because language, faith and nation are imprescriptible - they exist and that's all. Obviously, we distinguish a cyclicity of regeneration, a need for new ways of approaching the expression of life, but what matters is the understanding of the phenomena and the integration of mentalities and actions in a single market, creating diversity in universality. From the aforementioned equation, we do not remove the training process,because, regardless of the in-depth field, the form of education draws the rules of society and promotes development directions. Thus, we realize that man, from any meridian, is the promoter of a time and completes his work by relating to it.

Keywords: school; theatre directing; spirit; university; Stanislavski;

In trying to discover ourselves as artists, we are too often on the verge of making mistakes, or sometimes we may even commit acts that we will never be able to motivate or repair. There are many such acts, but two stand out among them. The first, as a common feature of every generation, is letting go of the past. The second, probably more dangerous than the first, coagulates in the future artist's desire to act similarly to the one who is successful or to the one whose work is said to represent the model and, therefore, success. On the wire stretched between these points each one of us dances at some point, until, if we're lucky, we fall and go our separate ways.

Creative Profile Outline

Author(s): Anca Doina Ciobotaru / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: creativity; introspection; self image; price; the arts of spectacle;

By analyzing the wealth of concepts and definitions, generated by the restlessness of creativity, we can accept that being creative involves the ability to recombine your knowledge/skills and – implicitly – the need for introspection. In other words, the first step towards creativity leads to the awareness of point A, from which one departs to the wished-for Z; the visualization of the desire/objective, the usefulness of the idea (perhaps even the urgency), and the state of agreement with the non-negotiable values outline the route whose starting point is in what we could generically call the identity of the moment. In the stage space, however, the journey unfolds in two dimensions: a real one - traveled by the artist (actor, puppeteer, dancer, director, choreographer, etc.) and a fictional one - traveled by the character, regardless of its form of spectacular transposition. Analyzing the connections can determine the degree of exploitation of your creative potential (infinite...!). The ways of shaping the creative profile reveal their multiplicity; we choose to propose the creation of a creative (and creative) identity profile through three key elements: self-image, introspection, and... price.

"Theatre should be free, like air or love". Joan Littlewood and the imperative of collective creation

Author(s): Răzvan Mureşan / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: collaborative theater; actor training; improvisation; British theatre; Joan Littlewood;

This paper aims to investigate the theatrical practices that define the work of one of the most influential voices in 20th century theatre. The practices and methods developed by Joan Littlewood over four decades of work outline a highly personal, inventive and dynamic aesthetic in which the emphasis is on creating cohesion within the team. The team is seen as a ”composite mind”, an ensemble that through rigorous physical and vocal training, complex theme documentation and improvisation, comes to function organically and is able to explore more freely and intensely. The use of a wide variety of means and formulas - music hall, commedia dell'arte, clowning, mime, but also elaborate lighting, cinematic projections, sound effects - and the involvement of the audience in the scenic approach are also defining elements of the theatre promoted by Joan Littlewood.

Female image from Euripides to Churchill

Author(s): Alexandra Felseghi / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: feminist theatre; feminism; political theatre; gender identity; performative writing;

This article aims to present some methods in which classical and contemporary playwrights choose to treat female characters in their writings. In close connection with a socio- political context that is continuously changing, female characters in dramaturgy are substantially evolving. If in the past centuries they developed almost exclusively in relation with the masculine characters, today they have a distinct, powerful voice, which is profoundly anchored in everyday realities. This voice accuses gender inequalities or abuses with which we are confronting as a society and also promotes an image of a female different from the stereotypes rooted in the collective mind. A key moment of this revolution in dramaturgy is the appearance of Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls, in 1982. This legendary moment innovated the manner in which we think feminine and feminism on stage and also the way in which we construct the structure of a story or a dialogue. All of these became a major influence for nowadays' dramaturgy. In the following, I will try to illustrate a few perspectives on female identity as seen through the lens of contemporary reader and spectator.

The festival - the mark of the city's cultural identity in the context of urban marketing

Author(s): Raluca Zaharia / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: festival; cultural identity; urban marketing; puppetry; digital art; interdisciplinarity; theater; technology; network; community; diversity;

Should we attach to the notion of identity, that of culture, we will have a more comprehensive and at the same time more precise vision of the relationship that exists between the two terms. The cultural identity is that something that recognizes the human community (social, political, regional, national, ethnic, religious) in terms of values,mentality, commitments, traditions, beliefs, historical memory.To understand the notions of identity and culture, we refer to the individual and then to the group and to the manner they relate to the community, society and why not, the citadel,meaning the city. The latter becomes cultural when it values the customs and traditions of its inhabitants, its heritage, the works of its artists and craftsmen. This article attempts to analyze the interdependence that could exist between a cultural manifestation, more precisely a festival with its thematic aesthetics specific management and the cultural identity of the city that hosts it.Nowadays, the culture plays the role of helping to convert cities into dynamic and attractive urban centers. It is commendable that this reconversion is also used by smaller towns in order to promote their identity. The phenomenon itself is known as urban marketing and has, among other attributes, the role of imposing a new way of conduct on civil servants and local public authorities. It also makes us have a certain conception of cities - in our case- thanks mainly to cultural history, but also in depending on the cultural policy they pursue,due to the image they want to promote, or through works of art, through the realization of certain artistic projects: festivals, branded cultural events, etc. This is the case of the city of Tournai in Belgium, a border settlement entered into the phenomenon of European metropolisation which leads to the formation of centers composed of networks of metropolises and which become economic, social and political pillars, but also cultural, with a whole administrative dynamic and cultural facilities (cultural centers,museums, theaters, universities, etc.). The biennial festival we are referring to is called "Découvertes, marionnettes et images", being the only one in the French-speaking area of Belgium. The reputation of the festival is inevitably associated with the city of Tournai, and this association adds more value, effectively contributing to its image in the region and not only. The cultural identity of the city is linked among other things to the evolution of the festival and vice versa.It is an international festival dedicated to contemporary forms of puppet animation. From the theater of objects, passing through street art, dance or digital art, each edition of the festival gives access to the wealth of contemporary forms of the puppet and marionette as well as their interdisciplinarity. The analysis of the "Découvertes, images et marionnettes" festival. In this context, taking into account the quoted references and the specific interferences of are search, is all the more complex and revealing at the same time.

Identity from a Theatrical Perspective

Identity from a Theatrical Perspective

Author(s): Radu Teampau / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: identity; self; thymos; interiority; Pirandello;

The present paper aims to revisit the definitions given to identity from the perspective of social sciences and philosophy in order to eliminate the variables and extract the constants that might form the basis of a conceptual tool which can be used from a theatrical perspective. The analysis of the notion of identity is based on the idea that it is not synonymous with the notions of self, ego or soul. The fact that identity, from the perspective of psychology, may be a result of the oscillation between interiority or the inner ego and exteriority or the outer ego is also taken into consideration. Furthermore, the meaning of the notion of identity is put in relation to thymos, the ancient concept. And, at the same time, we try to apply elements of this conceptual tool to Luigi Pirandello’s play Six Characters in Search of an Author in an attempt to investigate the way identity is seen and treated by the playwright.

The Opera Libretto – Adaptation of A Canonical Literary Text, The Opera O Noapte furtunoasă by Paul Constantinescu

Author(s): Cristi Avram / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: libretto; adaptation; compromise; Romanian music; I. L. Caragiale;

The opera libretto, born very often through the adaptation of large texts, is the foundation of an opera composition. What interests us is how it can independently support musicaly a story, while also preserving its quality as a literary text. On the other hand, we raise the question whether the libretto should work in the absence of the integrative, complementary background, which defines, in fact, the genre of opera - music. The first part of the study focuses on the opera libretto and the adaptation of the literary text, while the second part focuses more on Romanian music and, in particular, on the libretto of the opera O noapte furtunoasă by Paul Constantinescu.

Anaid Tavitian, a well-known theatre critic and literary secretary dedicated her book `Agatha Nicolau – Din dragoste. Antologie teatrologică` to an actress whose long career in various Romanian theatres has become an example of devotion for the words recited on a stage and emotional involvement of an artist for each part. Agatha Nicolau played in theatres in Timişoara, Arad, Constanţa and Bucharest and received numerous prizes and distinctions for her interpretation. She had recitals of highly professional levels and they have been appreciated by critics and public. The confessions of her colleagues showed their esteem for her entire career. The world of theatre, with actors, directors, scriptwriters and playwrights is brought in front of readers by Agatha Nicolau who was interviewed by Anaid Tavitian, who has, at her turn, a very good knowledge of this field. The portraits of the stage colleagues complete an approach of high intellectual level, focused on the Romanian theatre and its personalities.

Author(s): Emilia Jeziorowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 41/2022

Keywords: Occupy Wall Street; protest; mapping; spatiality; détournement

This article examines the topic of protest mapping during the rise of Occupy Wall Street in the United States in 2011–2012. It focuses on various practices of protest mapping, including a consideration of how space (public, urban, or of the protest camp) is represented in the visual sources discussed. It also addresses the qualitative difference between protest mapping and other mapping practices, as well as the categorization of protest mapping terms. Using the method of source analysis and online research, the article adopts, as its key concept for studying protest as a multi-threaded phenomenon, the notion of détournement. This concept was first described in 1957 by Gil Wolman and Guy Debord, and from the early 1960s was used as a creative method and also a revolutionary strategy by the avant-garde artistic group, the Situationist International. The categories of stasis, dynamism, and spatiality will also be important points of reference.

Urban Values in the Digital Space. The Street Art Roots of NFTs as a Problem

Author(s): Anita Błażejewska / Language(s): English / Issue: 41/2022

Keywords: NFT; street art; metaverse; Blockchain

This text is an attempt to describe a growing interest in transferring street art into digital art in the form of NFTs. By examining several urban values associated with graffiti and street art, it is possible to see how these phenomena affect new technologies. First, however, it is important to consider some street art NFTs and distinguish between their different types. We may identify three ways of presenting street art as NFTs: transferring the character to a different medium; assembling a collection of street art NFTs in a museum-like environment with each piece having its own characteristics; writing street artistry into the wider metaverse. I describe five urban values of NFTs: preservation, accessibility, illegality, money, and uniqueness. In conclusion, it is clear that NFTs change how viewers may perceive street art. NFTs are supposed to be eternal rather than ephemeral, and they lose street art’s association with spontaneity and illegality as well as its critique of commercialism. Street art as NFT is just another form of profit-making and one of its new values is money. It is possible to notice artistic values as well. NFTs are marked by diversity, and have their own rules (such as the importance of movement or looping), which are impossible to implement in traditional street art.

Day and Night. Activities by and for the Children from El Refugio in Ancient Neighbourhoods of the Historic Centre of Puebla

Author(s): Adriana Hernández Sánchez,Christian Enrique De La Torre Sánchez / Language(s): English / Issue: 41/2022

Keywords: children; neighbourhood; day; urban night; historic centre; displacements; autonomy; Puebla

The purpose of the following investigation is to understand how children from the old historic district El Refugio (or Barrio del Refugio) of the city of Puebla (Mexico) live in public spaces and what their days and nights look like. It is extremely important to understand the reasons for their appropriation of various places in the city because it allows one to explore the conditions in which they manifest autonomous attitudes. This article is therefore not only about customs and culture, but also about everyday relationships with the environment. Children are also involved in the activities of the group Re Genera Espacio (RGE) and the team of Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in the development of all kinds of educational, artistic, and social activities. Among the most important results obtained is the observation that safety conditions are created by children in independent groups which move to other neighbourhoods (“barrios”), such as San Antonio and Santa Anita. Children make the street their space because they have important knowledge of the area.
