OPPORTUNITIES FOR HANDLING CHILD AGGRESSION IN TOURIST ANIMATION THROUGH CREATIVE TOURISM

Author(s): Mariya Veleva,Krasimira Yancheva / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2017

Keywords: child aggression; behavior; social skills; tourist animation; creative tourism

The goal of this paper is to review some behavioral features of child aggression in order to suggest opportunities for handling it through creative tourism application. The research methods applied are theoretical synthesis, theoretical analysis and observation. We suggest that creative tourism has big potential in handling child aggression in tourist animation if applied in specific ways. To reveal the nature of aggression in child behavior we particularize the reasons: aggressive behavior in children, especially when social skills are missing, is used to attract attention, to achieve a goal, to satisfy desire for leadership, to overpower or suppress others. We insist on the importance of animators’ ability to handle child aggression and we precise and particularize the process. Building social skills, developing emotional intelligence and participating in positive group behavior are some of the suggestions we offer as opportunities to handle child aggression in tourist animation. The focus on child aggression in tourist animator’s work brings to light a problem that is still virgin regarding research in the Bulgarian scientific publications. This, and the suggestion how creative tourism can play significant role in handling child aggression are innovative and can contribute to other researches related to tourist behavior.

SUSTAINABLE WASTE UTILIZATION APPROACH FOR THE ECO-FRIENDLY COLOURATION OF ALPHITONIA EXCELSA LEAF-EXTRACT DYE ON NYLON SUBSTRATE

Author(s): Bipin Agrawal / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2017

Keywords: Alphitonia excelsa leaves; nylon; exhaust dyeing; natural mordant; shades; waste utilization

The utilization of synthetic dyestuff for the colouration of various textile fibres on commercial scale is quite efficacious due to their low cost, ease of production as well as application. However, the fact that synthetic dyes are carcinogenic in nature and are causing remarkable intimidation to the environment has led to the revitalization of the environmental friendly natural dyestuffs. Being eco-friendly, the natural dyes have a potential to gain importance commercially in the coming future. The present study deals with the application of a natural dye pertaining to the Rhamnaceae family. The natural colourant was extracted from the fallen, dried leaves of the Alphitonia excelsa tree and was applied onto the mordanted nylon substrate using exhaust dyeing technique. The mordant used for the study was a natural mordant, tannin, obtained from the used-up tea leaves and was applied by pre-, simultaneous- and post-mordanting techniques. The mordant plays an important role in attaining a preferred shade on a particular substrate. The colour strength of the dyed samples (both mordanted as well as unmordanted) was evaluated spectrophotometrically. The fastness properties of the dyed samples were found to be quite good. The washing fastness was rated as excellent for mordanted and dyed fabrics. The rubbing fastness, particularly dry rubbing fastness as well as the light fastness characteristics were found to be acceptable, from the dyer’s point of view, for all the dyed fabrics. Utilization of waste fallen leaves of the tree for extracting the natural dye and waste used-up tea leaves for mordanting may be anticipated as an “environmental-friendly approach” and a feasible stride towards waste utilization.

Keywords: Quality of Working Life (QWL): Occupational Safety and Health (OSH): medical establishments: health workers: healthcare

This study explores the factor conditionality of the quality of working life from healthy and safe working conditions among workers of eight healthcare establishments in Bulgaria. 510 employees completed a QWL questionnaire and assessed several claims related to a healthy and safe work environment. The results showed statistical significance between age, general and special work experience, and the subjective feeling of safe working conditions. A statistically significant positive correlation relationship between QWL and issues pertaining to the subjective perception of health and safety at work was observed. This was observed both in the overall assessment and for all seven subscales: workforce, remuneration, workplace, organization management, professional careers, social security and social benefits. A major factor is "attack security (physical or verbal)". The results are discussed in the context of research and practice implications.

The Body is Pivot

The Body is Pivot

The Body is Pivot

Author(s): Tales Frey / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Body; Experimental Arts; Gender; Identity; Performativity; Visual Arts

Contradicting the scenario full of images and the frantic pace of succession of information from the current consumer society and its technologies, since 2006 – when Tales Frey conceived the work “O Beijo” in partnership with the artist Cristine Ágape – he has created a series of actions guided by the minimum use of resources so that the main elements gain the maximum symbolic potential in each artistic expression originated. Still in contrast to the operating principle of the present time regarding an excess of information, it seeks to extend the time in activating simple actions, sometimes proposing insistent, repetitive gestures with clear objectives and, sometimes, presenting the body almost inert in a simple standby mode. In the book “Tempo e Memória”, by Katia Canton, there is an excerpt from a speech by the artist Bill Viola taken from an interview granted to Marcello Dantas in his documentary “Processing the Signal” (New York, 1989) where the artist says that the world pushes us to make “things shorter and shorter”, suggesting “more information in less time”. Based on this notion, Bill Viola proposes to do just the opposite: “to show less and less information in more time”. Tales Frey strongly identifies with this notion of time dilation as a tactic to induce the audience to an acute reflection stimulated by the few proposed signs. As questions and possible conclusions emerge on the part of the audience, with the time of action dragged out, an insistent image starts to impel new forms of interpretation about it and, thus, the meanings vary, are confirmed and/or changed and contradict. Although Tales Frey does not intend to place his work of live performance in a specific category, he understands it in part as a plastic art in movement and even as a kind of kinetic sculpture, since he uses the human body as a support to create reliefs, define shapes and spaces, providing three-dimensionality to each work produced, often denying the relations with the classic frontality of the scenic arts and with the inert matter of the visual arts. As opposed to the idea of frantic movement, he names most of his works as choreographies that are not necessarily submissive to the imperative of kinetics. Thinking more broadly about his artistic practice, Frey emphasizes that performance is the most recurrent means of expression in his propositions, but he is very committed to establishing the notion of performativity in different means, for example, using video, photography, the object, and the installation, among others. Although he uses nomenclatures that surround a certain artistic expression, he is aware of a post-media condition marked by the crossing of languages in current practices and, in this sense, each expression proposed by him is always integrated with several others, without walls, without categorical and orthodox restrictions.

Everyday Life in Various Slides and the Constant Carousel of Art

Author(s): Lenka Lukačovičová / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Action Art; Analogue Photography; Archive; Billboard Art; Collective Memory; Contemporary Photography; Cultural Identity; Happening; Installation; Lonely Planet Trnávka; Participation; Performance

The philosophy of Lenka L. Lukačovičová’s work is based on her interest in our cultural and personal identity, collective memory, but also problems with functioning, and problems associated with current situations in the area where she works. The presented portfolio shows her broad interest scale, which is, however, anchored in the three most dominant themes. When processing them, she works with relationships with several media: happening, performance, installation and photography. She continuously focuses on issues of culture, time and space, on woman, mother and her internal experience; transformation and disappearance associated with the change of the urban environment, its gentrification in connection with the presentation “place-specific” in public space. Her key projects began to emerge in 2012, 2013 (Quo Vadis Galleria; Permanent Exposition) with focus mainly on how the cultural institution works. She continuously develops her interest in cultural and collective historical memory in a series of exhibitions called the Grey Book. From the collected photos of portraits of persecuted women (1950s to 1970s of the 20th century), she created hand-enlarged glass plates from digital archives; then she laid them out on the floor Status quo ante in the space of the Trnava Synagogue and left them to disappear. Post-media and political works were created, but they slowly became also a kind of silent meditation on the everyday life of post-communist Slovakia. Everyday life has also become a theme in her other projects: (Non)decisive Moments, 2020, and Lonely Planet Trnávka (from 2020). Here, her photographs remarkably deal with urban spaces, the surroundings, space where we live. She gradually exhibits them directly at the place of creation, in the Vitrine Gallery ZORA, a bulletin board that functioned as an information board at the dilapidated, non-functioning Zora Cinema in the local Trnávka district of Bratislava. She creates an imagined bedeker, an obscure Instagram account playing with the world brand – the online guide lonely_planet_trnavka. (Note: In addition, from 2021, she realized a series of other billboard and vitrine gallery exhibitions in the cities in Slovakia which seem to be at a freezing point). The last presented level of her work derives relatively intensively from the work of other Slovak authors from the 1970s to 1990s of the 20th century. She creates a free interpretation of the works with roots in performance, which are usually recorded by photography. She calls cycles with the prefix RE:, as they are fundamentally based on repetition of re-creation, citation, or appropriation. Lukačovičová processes topics whose starting points, as well as solutions, are extremely fluid and changeable. She layers them and asks herself questions.

On the Parallel Struggles of Photography and GAN-generated Imagery

Author(s): Martina Šimkovičová / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: 19th century; Accumulation of knowledge; Black-box; Data society; GAN visuals; Lens-based imagery

This article analyzes certain aspects of the reception and acceptance of the emerging technology of GAN generated visuals (DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion) by the general public as of mid-2021 to early 2023. It will deal specifically with the negative and positive expectations of it and put them into the context of social acceptance and expectations surrounding the formation of the photography medium in the early 19th century. Both of the inventions mark a milestone in the timeline of a data-driven society. Both tools utilize a reference to reality or its visual coding. GAN image generators, as well as photography, were expected, as a product of science, to deliver almost mythically perfect, objective outputs. While photography had previously been used in pseudoscientific projects to support racist claims, the public appears surprised by the bias of the GAN datasets, and their creators are currently looking for ways to eliminate it through process moderation. The goal of using this comparison is to explore a common trait of both epochs: the affinity for devices, specifically the idea of “a black box”. It will aid us in describing the relationship of the data society to itself based on machine-based creation of visuals with varying degrees of autonomy and generativity. Finally, we will examine the practical implications of the discussed aspects in the near future.

Taboo Topics in Limited Series Offered by Internet-Distributed Television

Author(s): Zuzana Kvetanová,Jana Radošinská / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Internet-Distributed Television; Limited Series; Mini-Serial; Narrative; Serial; Taboo

The broader structural and organisational changes associated with the global expansion of Internet-distributed television have changed the ways in which we perceive the qualitative level and socio-cultural significance of television dramas. Individual transformations can be perceived in connection with the hybridisation of genres, the thematic variability of individual works, the number of episodes and their average length, or relevant considerations about the need to better understand TV dramas as products that are qualitatively equal to ambitious film production and in many respects even overshadow it. A currently resonating area of interest are mini-serials/ limited series, which target audiences often prefer over other types of episodic works with a significant number of seasons and instalments, emphasising their high-end quality and refined production value. The popularity of this type of content results from engaging and complex narrative structures, which often include explicit depiction of taboo topics, such as stories and plotlines related to death (or old age and/or dying), sexual behaviour, various deviations, extreme violence or self-harm. The presentation of these publicly suppressed topics in limited series is the focus of our interest. The main goal of the study is to reflect on the current popularity of television mini-serials in the environment of Internet-distributed television, taking into account the taboo topics that are portrayed in them. We achieve this goal on the basis of theoretical reflection on the issue, analysis of the thematic specifics of selected television works and subsequent synthesis of acquired knowledge.

Idiomatics and Their Semiotic Reflection in the Flow of Images and Words in Media

Author(s): Andrej Habiňák,Eva Habiňáková / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Headline; Mass media; Phraseology; Semiotic; Sign

Phraseology is the national wealth of every language and culture in general. It is unique, has a historical thread, reflects the wisdom of ancestors and the observations of contemporaries. It can be serious, funny, instructive, figurative and direct. That is why it is productive in literature, the media space and in common colloquial language. The authors of the article follow the emergence of idioms as an element of semiotics, which can be understood as a sign. Through semiotics, one can perceive not only the creation of idioms, but also their potential interpretation for the reader or viewer and track their impact and effect on the media perceiver. Semiotics provides phraseology with a sign subsystem in media space, advertising, billboards, caricatures and in the form of images in the printed press. Roman Jakobson and Umberto Eco are semioticians who brought a new look to semiosis in general. By doing so, they expanded the field of research to unexplored dimensions.

Keywords: Atoms; Bacteria; Biological philosophy; Dissertation thesis; God; Infection; Medicine; Novel; Philosophy; Principle of cohesion/cruelty; Principle of love.

This paper focuses on the writer Gejza Vámoš (1951 – 1956), namely his two publications of different natures, i.e. the novel Atoms of God and his Dissertation thesis in philosophy, The Principle of Cruelty. These are texts that were more or less created in the same time period, and in which the writer communicated his philosophical worldview in almost identical ways. The aim of this paper is to show the semantic proximity of philosophical and literary communication, and at the same time to make accessible how the various philosophical theses were “imprinted” into the novel through a literary setting.

Application of Virtual and Augmented Reality in the Context of the Development of Art Marketing Communication in the Space of Selected Cultural Institutions

Author(s): Lucia Spálová,Marek Štosel,Lukasz Pawel Wojciechowski / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Art Marketing; Audience Participation; Cultural Institutions; Interactive Artwork; Virtual and Augmented Reality

As new technological tools, virtual and augmented reality caused a revolution in culture and art during the critical situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It allowed the viewers to become the co-creators of art, which then changes under their influence. The property/essence of interactive art is the creation of a situation in which the visitor to a cultural institution comes into direct contact with an art object, which fundamentally changes the reception of the artefact. The aim of this scientific study is to identify the hybrid models of visitor participation in the artistic events hosted by Slovak cultural institutions – both offline and online – with a focus on interactive technologies. Using the case study method, we analyzed the contradictions in the definition of interactivity in terms of the pragmatic enhancement of the visitor experience in the cultural institutions (interactive work versus interactive marketing communication) in the interdisciplinary contexts of selected cultural institutions: Ponitrian Museum, Bratislava City Museum and Poliankovo Digital Gallery. The results show a scarce use of augmented reality in the art marketing communication of Ponitrian Museum, and interactive artefacts being part of the exhibition in the other analyzed institutions.

The Evolution of the Mattoni Brand Logo of the Company Mattoni 1873

Author(s): Ladislav Pátík / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Brand; Branding; Company; Mattoni; Rebranding; Strategy

Brand, branding and rebranding are phenomena of today. Brand and brand management are talked about in many contexts today, one of which is the strength and power of the brand. We are currently dealing with a number of branding and especially rebranding campaigns across the entire spectrum of products and services. What does brand, branding and rebranding bring and what does a long-term strategy in the field of rebranding look like? These are the basic questions we want to answer in our study. We chose the Czech brand Mattoni from Mattoni 1873. The goal is to show what a strategic approach to rebranding should look like and what brand and identity elements are part of it. At the same time, we want to point out that rebranding is not just a change to or updating of the logo, but that it is a conceptual and sophisticated system of logical steps that are not static, but reflect development trends. We draw information from generally available secondary data, as well as information provided by the company Mattoni 1873. The complexity, strategicness, long-term and precision of the rebranding of the Mattoni brand is an example and at the same time an inspiration for the correct grasp of the rebranding as a whole.
