Summary/Abstract: EU Regulation 679/2016, known to all of us as the GDPR, entered into force in 2016, more than five years ago, but only applies from 25 May 2018, after a two-year grace period, which most European countries, including Romania, have not used to launch education campaigns for data subjects and controllers. In May 2018, it was estimated that 20% of European controllers had started a GDPR compliance program. This percentage has risen significantly in the last three years, and is now estimated at over 60%, but at the same time it is increasingly concerning the quality of compliance achieved at European level. The biggest challenge for companies in obtaining and maintaining GDPR compliance remains the lack of a general culture of employee responsibility for data privacy. In recent years, since the COVID-19 pandemic was officially recognized, there has been more talk of GDPR than in the entire period since the entry into force of EU Regulation 679/2016 and it is sad that this virus was needed for all of us to understand that personal data that really deserves attention.
