Knowledge of author’s biography and historical linguistic research

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to demonstrate how a linguist can find biographic data knowing only the name and surname of the author of a manuscript. It is extremely important for a language historian as historical linguistics must possess a historical background without which drawing up a cohesive synthesis, registering and systematizing linguistic facts is impossible. Based on Józef Zmijewski’s description of the nature and etiology of plica neuropathica, methods and means for treating this – as he puts it – “medical condition”, the nomenclature he uses (I am explaining the origin of a variety of names of this hair disorder), as well as the knowledge from other domains, I attempt to find out what Zmijewski’s profession was. Adding this important fact to the biography of the author of The method will allow for further exploration of medical vocabulary contained in this historical piece of literature.
