Summary/Abstract: This article compares the mortality rate in Bulgaria before and during COVID-19. The analysis is based on annual data of the population and the number of deaths - in total and by age groups in the period 2002 - 2020. Official data sources have been used - NSI (National Statistical Institute) and EUROSTAT. The survey methodology includes total mortality rates, age mortality rates, standardization of the overall mortality rate and decomposition of the relative difference in mortality. On one hand, the comparative analysis takes into account the difference in the total mortality rates during the compared periods, which is due to the change in age mortality. On the other hand, the influence of the age structure of the population is taken into consideration.
