Summary/Abstract: European security and defense policy has a long history, with various factors influencing its development. For a long time, the EU had fallen into a stupor from the ongoing development of security and defense policy. Two key events are pulling EU Member States out of their lethargy. One is the war in Iraq in 2003. The transatlantic crisis over the Iraq war has revealed cracks in the building of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy. However, one positive outcome of the crisis was that it forced Europeans to realize the need for some common strategic thinking and emphasized the need for a common strategic vision to strengthen internal cohesion at EU level.
