Summary/Abstract: he aim of this paper is to present the mental structure and identity of the Tahitian people by analyzing some of the works done by Gauguin. Referring to some concepts of contemporary identity constructions, we try to give light to the manner and the reasons why one of the greatest painters of modern art depicts natives and their surroundings, which are the traits that distinguish this community and what, according to the painted images and scenes, are their social and individual values and principles. Out attempt is to demonstrate that Gauguin, by rejecting his culture of origin, clings to another one, because of his own identity Tsearch and place of belonging. It is the conclusion of this paper to see if he accomplished the above mentioned.
