Summary/Abstract: This paper characterises 18 synonyms of padaczka (epilepsy) certified in 19thcentury texts. The source basis was the medical dictionaries of those days, titles of articles in medical press, selected medical guides and dictionaries including the Polish language (monolingual and multilingual; general and dialectal ones). This served as the basis for establishing the reach of the characterised synonyms in the 19th c., which was the time of intensive works on organising the Polish medical terminology. The analysis permitted the conclusion that padaczka and epilepsya were the two terms that were used most frequently and broadly (at all terminological levels of the language of the discussed century) at that time.
