Summary/Abstract: Romania's maritime merchant fleet was established in 1895 and has been in the public eye since the beginning. It was seen not only as an economic necessity for ensuring trade relations with the world, but also as a national pride for the young Romanian state. The newspapers of the time paid special attention to the problems that this fleet had during its existence and supported the efforts to modernize the commercial maritime fleet.
