Summary/Abstract: On February 6, 1944, the British ambassador to Moscow, Sir Archibald Clark-Kerr, informed General Sir Collin Gubins of an article in the Pravda newspaper about Operation Autonomous. The article reproached SOE for not informing the Soviet side about sending the Autonomus team to Romania. A big scandal broke out because both the USSR and Britain began to think of Romania as primarily a Soviet affair. By 1944, Romania had little part in Britain wartime strategy. Unlike Greece, she was not important to British communications with the Empire. This article presents how this scandal evolved between the two parties as reflected in the SOE documents and how the Soviets used this scandal to demarcate their area of influence in Romania.
