Summary/Abstract: While teaching German I have always been confronted with the terms task and exercise. So we ask ourselves, what do we mean by these two terms? At first glance, this question seems to be something special. The answer, however, appears to be different in most textbooks used today. Some of them address only problems while others focus on exercises. A third group of textbooks works only with model sentences. I discovered this problem years ago by lecturing students in history specialization. Whenever I read a text and subsequently asked them questions related to it, they all reacted in the same way. Whether the task was related to communication or language, they were always inclined to reproduce the contents of the given material word by word, sentence by sentence. This could be avoided in textbooks by making a clear distinction between exercise and task.
