Effects of Scientific Communication Crisis and Access to Scientific Information Resources in Libraries of the Republic of Moldova

Summary/Abstract: As journal prices began to climb, the „serials crisis” was viewed nearly everywhere as a library problem. Libraries and research institutions in the Republic of Moldova are in similar situations. Because of escalation of subscription prices, the libraries in the Republic of Moldova are forced to continue cancelling scientific journals titles. After a survey in 11 libraries we concluded that there is a negative dynamic in subscription to scientific journals. In the majority of libraries budgets are spiralling down and it becomes increasingly hard to maintain existing subscription lists. Most libraries cancel scientific journal titles because of reducing budgets for subscription and increasing subscriptions prices. Scholars from Moldovan research institutions consider that „serial crisis” is a barrier to access scientific information, and scientific journals prices are a burden for the scientific institutions.
