The First Song of Moses in the Psalter and Parimejnik

Summary/Abstract: In Orthodox practice, the First Song of Moses (Exodus 15:1–19) along with the other Old Testament Canticles was appended to the Psalter and translated into Old Church Slavonic as a part of the Psalter. The same text is read as a pericope in the Slavonic Old Testament lectionary (Parimejnik). The pericope is presented in its entirety in five parchment manuscripts from the 14th – early 15th c. which adhere to the Oldest type of the Parimejnik. In this article, the text of Exodus 15:1–19 in the Slavonic Psalter and Parimejnik is compared. It is shown that the text in the Parimejnik derives from that of the Psalter. All common readings of the five Parimejnik manuscripts can be found in the Psalter, sometimes in the Archaic redaction, but mostly in the later versions. Moreover, the majority of variant readings peculiar to certain groups of the Parimejnik copies or even individual readings of single manuscripts are attested in different Psalter versions. Thus, it may be concluded that before the 14th c., the text of Exodus 15:1–19 had been borrowed into the Parimejnik from the Psalter several times; afterwards, individual manuscripts could repeatedly be corrected according to different Psalter versions. In the article, the First Song of Moses is published according to a Russian Parimejnik from the 14th c.
