STRĂINUL IN LITERATURA ITALIANĂ CONTEMPORANĂ
STRANGER IN THE CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN LITERATURE

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the image of the stranger in the contemporary Italian literature. The history of Italian literature is a closed system, devoid of contact with other scientific matters and foreign literatures. It is normal that Italian authors and crititcs do not write about foreigners, even if Italian society is now multicultural, especially in big cities like Milan and Rome. In the literature of other European countries, the analysis of the stranger has been explored in post-colonial studies. In Italy, the post-colonial past has been removed in a Freudian way; this removal has not allowed literature and critique to start a serious and necessary analysis. The only people who have written about foreigners are comparative critics and foreign authors who, twenty years ago, migrated to Italy from former Italian colonies and eastern Europe. Italian authors from Istria after the second World War have also written about foreigners; in their novels, stranger – Croat or Slovene – is not just a stereotype, but someone open to communication. The instrument of such dialogue is literature. Unfortunately, this interesting page of Italian literature has not yet entered maisntream critical works.
