Summary/Abstract: Árpád Buday (1879–1937) was the first of Béla Pósta’s students who later became his colleagues. In 1899, the leadership of the Transylvanian Museum Association appointed the second year student as fellow of the Collection of Coins and Antiquities and in 1900 as its first intern. In 1901, as a fourth-year student he was elected assistant professor of the Institute of Archaeology. In 1903, Buday graduated as teacher of history and Latin. In 1906, as a secondary school teacher, he was appointed to the university institute and collections of the association. In the next year, he was awarded a PhD degree in archaeology, ancient history and art history with summa cum laude. In 1911, he became privat-docent and in 1917, was appointed public extraordinary professor. His colleagues considered him a future chair of the department of ancient history and archaeology to be founded. Pósta directed his student towards provincial Roman studies and the limes research started by Károly Torma. Buday extended his domestic studies by a foreign trip. After Pósta’s death, the Transylvanian Museum Association assigned him to lead the Collection of Coins and Antiquities. In 1924, he moved to Szeged and started archaeological education in his master’s spirit. However, he had to secede his field of research.
