The Arctic Region - between cooperation, competition and militarization

Summary/Abstract: The fast-melting ice in the Arctic region comes with a series of opportunities in the High North, such as the promise of new trade routes, the rich reserves of gas and natural resources and the military strategic importance. Competition for the opportunities in the Arctic has opened up, and in this context, we see an increase in the militarization of the region, thus raising questions about the chances of an emerging conflict. The aim of this paper is to look at the cooperation, competition and militarization in the Arctic region, and further trace three scenarios for the region’s future.
