Summary/Abstract: The study presents information on the trends in Slovak textbooks policy such as granting approval and recommendation clause, and, current market offer of the Slovak language textbooks for primary education. It reflects on the textbook quality assessment criteria that were reintroduced by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic as a tool for assessing quality. The presented results were obtained applying comparative method and partial (and detailed in some aspects) content analysis of the available Slovak language textbooks (except alphabet books that represent a specific textbook form). The author of the study analyses and compares the textbooks and specifies their particularities without presenting recommendations that would favour any of the analysed textbooks. Based on the author’s own experience, the study aims to illustrate how insufficiently and vaguely defined criteria with their ambiguous interpretation and broad definition scope lead to unclear position of reviewer’s job. The study also points out at the fact that the experts from various fields do not pay enough attention to a deep analysis of teaching tools. Importance of such deep analysis is underrated in the textbook production process.
