Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the unstandardized urbanonym ‘Kandia’ and its variants ‘Kandije’, ‘Kandija’ and the only standardized form ‘Kandijská’ Street. The toponym is analysed from various aspects: 1. the geographical distribution; 2. the historical mentions; 3. the method of importing the name by the other ethnic groups (for example Italians, Greeks, Hungarians, Croats) to Slovakia; 4. the motivation and situation by the nominating process; 5. the etymology. The exonym ‘Kandie’ is geographically distributed in the Slavic countries, such as in Croatia (Dalmatia), Bosnia and Herzegovina, but mainly in Greece and Italy. In a different phonological structure, the name also occurs in Arab countries. The distribution in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary is not so frequent, hence it could signal the influence of foreign language and ethnicity. Therefore, the research of ‘Kandia´s’ etymology and its motivation are based on the foreign language area. The study takes into account the influence of Greek, Italian and its dialects, Croatian and its dialects and Arabic. It compares these influences with the domestic vocabulary. The main aim of this study is to open a discussion about the urbanonym ‘Kandia’, not to come to a clear conclusion.
