Priest in Lublin-based students’ opinion

Summary/Abstract: The question is raised of how students happen to understand the noun ksiądz ‘priest’.Diagnostic in its intention, the study was conducted among students of the Facultyof Humanities, of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The subjects weregiven two tasks: the first one was to enumerate all the words and expressions that cometo one’s mind when the word ksiądz is uttered/heard, which was meant to elicit freeand continuous associations that the word may evoke. In the other task, the studentswere asked to formulate their own definition of the word ksiądz. A close analysis of thequestionnaire results points to a clear ambivalence in how the priest may be judgedor assessed. It also allows for many other intriguing observations about the students’axiological and cognitive perspectives on the subject of the survey.
