Summary/Abstract: Portraiture has a long and extensive history. It has been developing across various different stages of civilization. Portraiture as a specific genre has always conformed to the social, religious or artistic conventions. Functions and roles of this genre have progressed along the ever-changing human experience and technological transformation of society. The submitted study does not represent a lengthy excursus on the history of art; on the contrary, it presents a fleeting glance at interesting cultural roles of a portrait, social phenomena and functions that are related to this form of depicting a human being.
