Summary/Abstract: Political repression is still a hot topic in the media of present-day Russia, even thirty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Arguments continue over the commemorative plaques and memorials to victims of political persecutions; attempts are sometimes made to re-evaluate or even justify the Great Terror, and most of the archival materials of the NKVD-KGB are still inaccessible. However, even in Russia there are places which, in historical terms, are so closely linked to the Gulag that the topic of the victims of political repression remains a living part of the local culture.
