Summary/Abstract: Historical evidence about the past, and especially about the more distant past, contains many contradictions that are evaluated, selected, interpreted and used in different ways. This is largely true for the Balkans. At the same time, the natural sciences are developing new methods that make it possible to detect errors and inconsistencies in the sources and to make the necessary corrections. Of particular interest is the genetic research. The databases accumulated so far allow for statistical analysis and conclusions from it. In this research, two examples of historical evidence from the past, that many modern scholars question and even completely reject, are analyzed. The two examples are of the Bulgarians in present-day northern Greece and of the Albanians in and around Athens. Genetic research provides a strong argument in their favor: there is a clear genetic closeness between Bulgaria and Northern Greece on one hand and between Southern Greece and Albania on the other.
