Austrian German and Romanian German

Summary/Abstract: Looking on standard German, the opinion that it exists in regional and national variants or varieties is accepted in linguistics as well as in everyday life. The existence of an Austrian variety stands uncontested, more and more a Romanian variety is being perceived and accepted. This article discusses the basic concepts of the specific debate of variation linguistics, the word deutsch, ‚German‘, and the central notions pluricentric and pluriareal, it compares the Austrian and Romanian varieties of standard German, respectively, and it argues for a more substantial recognition of the variety spoken in Romania.
