Summary/Abstract: The article presents the role of palaeography in work on old prints. Palaeography is one of the auxiliary sciences of history. It can also be applied to research on the history of books. One can divide palaeography into theoretical and practical. The knowledge of theory proves fundamental in the process of practical reading of texts (printed ones and manuscripts). Mastering the principles of abbreviation facilitates the solution of the abbreviations used. Palaeography is employed in conjunction with other auxiliary sciences, e.g., heraldry, chronology, and sphragistics.
