Summary/Abstract: The Council of State of the Republic of Poland was a collegial supervisory organ of state authority in 1947–1989 and played an important role at the times of the Polish People’s Republic. It functioned within the framework of the system of unity of state power. At the end of the 1980s, the role of the Council of State of the Republic of Poland clearly weakened, which resulted inthe abolition of this organ in 1989, and subsequently its replacement by a one-man head of state. The article describes, among others, institutional position of the Council of State of the Republic of Poland and its tasks, especially in the field of security, in the period when it performed its functions,as well as its importance in 1981 related to the introduction of the martial law in Poland. Attention was also paid to the issue of states of emergency, because according to the Constitution of the Polish People’s Republic, the Council of State of the Republic of Poland was authorized to make decisionson the introduction of martial law.
