Summary/Abstract: In response to ongoing discussions on the merits of funding university R&D, the objective of this paper is to analyze the diffusion of university knowledge among private enterprises in the United States over time, identify factors that contribute to this diffusion and indicate conditions necessary for the knowledge acquired from universities to imply innovative output and consequently competitive advantage of enterprises. The results of the analysis indicate that until 1980, as a result of unfavorable legislative solutions, the government policies to promote university inventions not always translated into effects in the form of increased flow of knowledge to industry. Only since 1980 there has been noticeable continued growth of knowledge flows from universities to industry as well as innovative output and competitiveness of industry being increasingly based on university knowledge, with contribution to knowledge diffusion in industry coming only from those academic researchers who have direct contact with industry.
