Summary/Abstract: Butmir is the oldest and most famous late Stone Age archaeological site in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Excavations in Butmir were discovered in the Ilidža area, today a suburb of Sarajevo, as early as 1893 by the Austro-Hungarian government during the construction of an agricultural school. The site made Bosnia and Herzegovina known in world scientific circles. Excavations at the Butmir site lasted from 1893 to 1896. The research work was performed by eminent experts from the National Museum Vaclav Radimski and FranjoFiala. This sensational discovery at the end of the 19th century led to the holding of the International Congress of Archaeologists and Anthropologists in Sarajevo in August 1894.
