Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the basic characteristics of environmental movements which are considered among the social movements, and the transformation they have undergone in terms of intellectual aspects. Environmental movements, which differ from other social movements with their distinctive and common features, have developed periodically with the change in political, economic, and cultural structure. In this respect, environmental movements have a wide repertoire as a reflection of social discontent from industrialization to globalization, from modern society to post-modern social structure, from local to global scale. It is necessary to evaluate the effects of change imposed by political, economic, and social structures on historical and spatial deviations of the environmental movements and their future. As a result of the study, it is concluded that today's environmental movements periodically differentiates include characteristics and tend to be effective on a global scale by taking beyond national borders. With the advent of developments in science, technology, and communication techniques, local and discrete environmental movements have gained the opportunity to articulate with the global information network and appeal to large audiences.
