Summary/Abstract: The administrative area now constituting Sarajevo Canton has been the subject of archaeological investigations since the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina first began its operations. During the Austro-Hungarian period, archaeological excavations began on the toponymic site of Butmir. Another important archaeological site where several continuous stages of human habitation have been identified is Soukbunar and Debelo Brdo. Between the two world wars, the antique villa rustica at Stup was also excavated. Since then, excavations have been carried out in several sites in and around Sarajevo. One of the most important sites to be excavated and conserved is the antique settlement of Aqua S..., in llidža. In later times, too, the area of llidža municipality has had much of interest to offer the disciplien of architecture. During the 1970s, excavations were carried out at Pavlovac near Kotorac, Mihaljevid near Rajlovac, and the churches at Rogačići and Vrutci. In 1991 soundings were begun at the Aqua S... site in llidža on the outskirts of Sarajevo.
